A llunkrapt Treasary.
The Harrison administration will leHve
a bankn;p. treasury. The legerdemain
of republican bookkeeping may attempt
to conceal this fact, but it will hTd!y
succeed. The present condition of the
treasury and the me'hods adopted by
Secretary Poster to conceal the disagrees,
ble tru'b are set forth in the following
editorial from the Philadelphia Times:
When President Harrisou entered office
he found over $65,000,100 of a suplus
in the treasury. Stating the treaurv
account as Secretary Foster has since
stated it in bis juggling way by the aid
of congress, the surplus in the treasury
on the day that Harrison assumed his
position was not less than $ 150.000,000
The (65,000.000 surplus as stated by the
Cleveland secretary of the secretary did
not embrace the 155.000.000 of bank re
demption fund since covered into the
treasury, nor did it embrace some $20,
000,000 of subsidiary coin, or the balances
ot disbursing officers amounting to some
20,000.000 more in the various deposi
tories of the government. Today the
Rasury is literally bankrupt, and only
by the studied abuse of figures is it made
to appear as even nominally solvent. The
1100,000,000 of gold coin for the re
demption of treasury notes, the subsid
iary coin and the accounts of disbursing
officers are all taken Into the treasury
