A . CAPTAIN GENERAL.
An Enthusiastic Young Schoolmaster Who
tVent to the Great Struggle.
When President Lincoln, in 1861, called
for troops to serve for three months, one of
the first to respond was- a yonng school
master in an obscure village in southern
Pennsylvania. Because of his educational
qualifications he was chosen captain of his
company. For a week he was busy organ
izing and after his own idea disciplining
his command.
That he might present an appearance
sufficiently martial he ordered from the
Village tailor a nniform. Neither he nor
the tailor had any idea of the distin
guishing badges of rat:k so important in
the outer makeup of a soldier, and an old
print of General Worth, which had decked
the wall of the tailor's parlor since the
days of the war with Mexico, was resorted
to for hints. The result was a faultless
copy of the garments of the hero of Cerro
Gordo.
The captain was delighted, and donning
the suit he set out with his command for
the 6tate capital. On the way he stopped
for a day to gather ideas in tactics at Car
lisle barracks, then a regular army post.
The sight of a round hundred of bump
kins as inharmonionsly clod as the army
of Falstaff or the soldiers of the sultan of
Morocco, headed by a major general in full
regimentals and marching on foot up to
the barracks, was a novel one to the regu
lars, who, taking in the situation, gravely
saluted the general at every opportunity.
One old sergeant spent almost the entire
day in a charitable donation of information
on company movements.
When the nest morning came the cap
tain general" marshaled his host and
footed it eighteen miles to Harrisburg,
where, at high noon, to spirited music, the
company, with its glittering leader,
tramped into the city. For two days the
captain strutted about, wondering at the
salaams that greeted him from all quar
ters, until an acquaintance met him and
said:
"When did vou become a major gen
eral?"
'A major general? I am a captain," be
replied.
"I will tell you what you are." said the
acquaintance. "You are the greatest sen
sation in camp, and the sooner you take off
that major general's coat the better; the
boys think you are a drum major."
As the captain's pocket was light and
his warurooe limited no course was open
to him but to cut dov.-n tlfe coat. By back
alleys he was guided to a tailor's shop,
where, rushing up to the astonished pro
prietor, lie whispered:
".My friend, what will you charge to re
duce my rank and make a captain of me
Youth's Companion.
His Mother's Pudding.
A man who did not keep in mind that in
boyhood he ate his food wit h a better sauce
than any cook ever invented was in the
habit a habit said to be common of mak
ing his wife uncomfortable by a too fre
quent reference to his mother's wouderf ul
culinary skill.
Once, however, he was put to silence for
a few days at least.
"John," said his wife, "I wish yon would
tell me just how your mother made her
plum pudding. Then perhaps I could suit
you."
"Why, she took some raisins and stirred
'em vtpwith pudding and baked it. That's
all."
"But. John, renl plum pudding is
boiled."
"Oil. of course. Mother always boiled it
after she baked it." Boston Transcript.

Royalty and Swear Word.
William the Conqueror did not introduce
swearing into England, but he brought
with him a very forcible oath. William
was accustomed to swear "by the splendor
of God," and on such occasions he com
bined with it the "terrible aspect of the
eyes," which always took the place of
swearing in I he case of Sir Joseph Porter,
K. C. I!. After William's time the rulers
of England, with possibly here and there
au exception, swore with great frequency
and vigor. It is related that even Queen
Bess, whose auburn locks did not belie a
fiery temper, would break into a string of
expletives that would rattle the royal -win
dows and frighten the household and royal
attendants from all sense of diplomatic re
