Butler's Kindness to an I -Confederate.
When the democrats first obtained
control of the lower liranch of congress
sfter the war, a southern man came to
Washington to get ollicc, says a corre
spondent of the St. Louis Globe-Democrat,
lie relied confidently upon his
war record and his social " relations.
His friends received him with open
arms, but did nothing for him beyond
the cordial greeting. The ex-confederate
waited until his means were ex
hausted, and the situation had become
desperate. One day, with his soul
full of bitterness, he walked into the
presence of Gen. Butler and told his
story.
"Can yon write a rood hand?" asked
the general, when he had heard it all.
"les, said the southerner.
"Let me see," demanded the gen
eral.
The visitor took pen and paper and
wrote.
"That'll do." the general comment
ed. "How are you on figures?"
The southerner thought he was
pretty fair. The general called off
rapidly and the other made a mental
calculation and gave the result.
"I think you'll do," said the general.
"Here is 100. Go down-town and get
a business suit of clothes. V. any
little debts you've incurred. Then
come back."

One day Gen. Butler sent for him. He
had come into possession of a verv
large tract of timber and mineral land
in a southern state. On the land squat
ters had been settled for many years.
They must be placated anil " their
rights must bo acquired before Gen.
Butler's title could be made clear.
Hundreds of thousands of acres were
embraced in the tract- To remove
the cloud meant a fortune. The peo
ple were hardy mountaineers. They
had the reputation of making short
work with those who disputed owner
ship of the land with tbem.
"Do yon think you can do anything
with it?" (Jen. Butler asked, after be
had examined what was desired.
"I'll try it," said the ex-coufederate.
He went south and spent twelve
months among the mountaineers. The

got on the right side of the squatters.
A few hundred dollars went a long
way. This settler was bought out?
That oue was induced to move and
squat outside of the Butler tract. In
various ways the agent acquired all of
the squatters' rights with their full
consent. At Hie end of the year he
carried back to the general the papers
which made him undisputed owner of
all of the valuable land.
