CKiCASO. Mnr-ifc 9. All ths railways
tr.Ti::i:s into Chicago were represented at
the meeting ol the general managers which
cok place in the Western Passenger asso
ciation's rooms in the Rookery bnildinn
yesterday General Manager K. St. John,
cf the Kock Island, presided. The meeting
was called not eo much to discuss th re
quest of the switchmen for an advancf of
wages as to consider in what terms to Eerd
a refusal to that request. It was thought
by the majority that if a thorough st.tte
ment of the situation was pi von both to ti:
switchmen and the public the position of
tha roads would he strengthened.
A Full Statement To He Made.
It was determined, therefore, to draw
up a document giving the pro?s eari.I.it;"
cf the roads and the working expenses,
which, it is claimed, will phow that while
the eurnir.frs have decreased a con-idt:raile
per cent, the workimr expense, which in
clude Watces, have largely increased. On
this account and for no other the roqn--t
of the switchmen will Ik? declined. Tl.is
it is thought will he a eufiicicnt reason to
satisfy the public and also th; ook-r UcaiU
araoii!,' the switchmen.
Will There lie a strike?
It is impossidle to say what will be the
result. Nothing will be known until the
switchmen tnke action on the reply to their
demands, which will take a couple of
weeks. It is pretty well known that the
officers of the crand lode arc opposi-d to a
strike, nil I ir i.- .t!so believed that a major
ity of tlie k: iev;t:.oe coutmit .'ee, though in
full sympstthy with the demands made, is
nc;aiiist a sti i e ;it pi'i-scnt.
