ANOTHER ORIGIN FOR "O. K."
Said to Be a Colonial Corruption of a
San Domingo City.
O. K. is a popular American abbrevia
tion meaning "all right," used not only
in current talk but in serious business,
as in the marking of documents, etc
In early colonial days the best rum
and tobacco were imported from Aux
Cayes, in San Domingo. Hence the best
of anything came to be known locally
as Aux Cayes or O. K. The term did
not, however, pass into general use
until the presidential campaign of
1828, when the very much supposed
illiteracy of Andrew Jackson, the
Democratic candidate, was the stock
in trade of his whig opponents.
Seba Smith, the humorist, writ
ing under the name of "Major
Jack Downing," started the story that
Jackson indorsed his papers O. K.,
under the impression that they formed
the initials of "Oil Korrect." It is not
impossib'e that the general did use
this indorsement and that it was used
by other people also. . Hut Mr. Parton
discovered in the records of the Nash
ville court, of which Jackson was judge
before he became president, numerous
documents indorsed O. R., meaning
order recorded. He urges, therefore,
that it was a record of that court with
some belated business which Major
Downing saw on the desk of the presi
dential candidate. However this may
be, the Democrats in lieu of denying
the charge, adopted the letters O. K.
as a sort of party cry, and fastened
them on their banners.
LOVED THE MAN WHO BEAT HER
Returning to Consciousness Her First
Thought Was of Her Husband.
The clanging bell of the hospital
ambulance had warned the pedes
trians and the street was clear when
the vehicle rattled up to the door of
the big double decker New York tene
ment "Mngsey's done it this time for fair,
doctor!"' shouted one of the crowd
that had gathered on the sidewalk as
the young ambulance surgeon disap
peared in the doorway.
Up two flights and at the back the
doctor found a white-faced old woman
who told him in awed whispers that
she was afraid her son had killed his
wife.
"He's a good boy when he's sober,
sir, but it's the drink that makes him
beat her," pleaded the old mother, as
the doctor hurried into the room at
the back.
There on a cot under the window
lay the unconscious form of a young
woman, who would have been rather
pretty but for the bruises that her hus
band's fists had left on her pale face.
A quick examination showed that she
was only stunned, and the restorative
which the doctor gave her had almost
immediate effect.
"Where's Mugsey, mam?"' she asked
of the old woman almost as soon as
she opened her eyes.
"Here I am," answered a voice from
the fire-escape, and "Mugsey" clam
bered in the window as the disgttsted
doctor hurried out of the door.
Answered.
It is not always safe to be too confi
dent in your assertions, even to an ig
norant man. for he may get the better
of you in an argument. The truth
was well illustrated in a story told at
a recent conference in England on
technical education in villages. One
speaker, referring to the prevalent ig
norance about common things, said
that he once saw a laborer digging
flints in the chalk, and asked him if he
thought they grew.
'"No," was the reply. "I don't think
about it; I knows they do."
'Then place a flint on your chimney
piece, and see how much it grows in a
twelve-month."
"All right, sir, and do you do the
same with a tater and see how much
that grows "'

The carnival thr-n lasted :ix months,
and masking was a univerral habit. It
has been said that in tiie beginning
the mask was a token of fraternal con
descension on the part of the rich and
noble toward their inferiors. It leveled
all ranks like the grave, though in a
more agreeable way. Hut this Utop
ian justification of it soon passed out
of date. It became instead the very
best possible vehicle for intrigue and
social corruption. That in effect was
what it was. During carnival time no
one thought of going out of doors ex
cept in disguise. The maid sent on an
errand must first don her mask of
which no doubt, her lover, or lovers,
had the key. The mother with a child
ill her arras, masked both herself and
the child.

"Castoria is an excellent medicine for chil
dren. Mothers have repeatedly told me of its
good effect upon their children.'
Dr. O. C. Osgood,
Lowell, Mass.
Castoria is the best remedy for children of
which I am acquainted. I hope the day is not
far distant when mothers will consider the real
interest of their children, and use Castoria in
stead of the variousquack nostrums which are
destroying their loved ones, by forcing opium,
morphine, soothing syrup and other hurtful
agents down their throats, thereby sending
them to premature graves."
