Wheeler has returned from Chicago
where he has been for the last week
on a business trip in the interest of
the canal. He reports everything
favorable and expects to begin work
as soon as the ground settles.
Ixgan Brown of Nebraska, is
back on a visit to his father, A. R.
Brown. He brought a wife with
him and is receiving congratulations
from the boys on his good luck.
Everything has been very quiet
here fhe past few weeks. 'Squire
Brown has had but one case of drunk
in the last three months. That don't
look bad for a town that has four sa
loons and only about 400 inhabi
tants. Mrs. Hannah Smith, wife of George
Smith, of Illinois City, died at the
home of her son, William Smith, in
Milan, on the 19th inst., of cerebral
apoplexy, aged OS years. The fu
neral services were held at 9 o'clock
this morning, with interment at Illi
nois City, her former home. She
leaves, besides her husband, three
sons, James, William and George, all
of this village. She was born in
Springfield, O., came to Illinois in
the v,tar 1SS0, and settled in Illinois
City where she has since resided.
She was visiting her sons here when
she was taken sick.
