MOLINE MAY MOVE
To Secure the Clan Factory a It Did the
Moline, which secured the Sears
Johnson flour mill from Rock Island
through dilatory practices here, may
move to secure the glass factory
which Rock Island ought to take kold
of, as repeatedly urged by The Ar
gus. The Republican-Journal learns
from the Union of this city that the
project looking to the reestablish
mcnt of the plant here frozen out by
the United Glass syndicate has failed,
which is not true. The local under,
taking has not failed, though it is
aggravating the slow progress that is
being made. The Republican-Journal
says: The loss of the glass works
is a serious blow to Hoc k Island and
the three cities. Over a hundred
skilled and well paid workmen were
employed directly and others indi
rectly, and the removal of these men
and their families, which now ap
pears inevitable, means a reduction
of several hundred in the population
of Rock Island.
I rges Moline to Take Hold.
If it be true, as reported, that our
neighbor has given up the idea of
forming a new glass company, the
Republican-Journal would commend
the matter to the 'consideration of
Moline. Why couldn't our Swedish
American investors for instance, lind
herein material for a profitable coop
erative industry? Moline has the ad
vantage of possessing in boundless
quantity as good stone for glass silli
cates as there is in the United States.
The crushing works on .Sylvan island
send out many carloads of this ingre
dient every month to the largest
glass concerns in the country. A
jualitive examination has shown this
limestone deposit to be the purest
for glass manufacture of anv that lias
been tested anywhere west of the Al
leghany s. The possession of this
important natural resource ought to
be an argument in favor of our pos
sessing an industry to utilize the
same. It has been shown that there
is an immense amount of window
glass consumed in the three cities by
sash factories, etc... and it will be too
bad if these concerns arc to be com
pelled to send abroad for this commo
dity when it can just as well be pro
duced at home. A cooperative glass
factory in Moline, we believe, would
flourish, and we don't believe that it
would have anything to fear from the
United Glass company.
