The state vetonirary surgeon is
expected in Rock Island this week to
investigate the cases of glanders re
cently discovered at Hampton, and
where two horses afflicted with the
disease were shot, and the owners

Floating down the big brook in a
little shallop last week was one of
the last of Black Hawk's tribe. H
claims to be a grandson of that noted
chief and lives on the Osage reserva
tion. This was his first voyage on
the river since the light of Bail Axe.
He had been taken to the World's
fair by Buffalo Bill, and becoming
disgusted with the treatment there
left the wild carnival of nations and
strayed westward to Savanna, where
he purchased his frail looking craft
and floated down past the lands and
scenes of his childhood. He was
dressed in the garb of the pale face,
and. save his tawny hue and high
cheek bones, would have passed for
a Canuck woodsman."

that the C, R. I. & P. switchmen are
greatly excited over the rumor that
their wages are to be cut 10 per cent
for 90 days. The proposition has
not yet boon made officially, bill it is
expected each day. and when it does

ance committee of the switchmen has
been in the city a couple of times
during the last week and met the
men at a secret meeting. It is
clained that he made a proposition
to the men and attempted to get
them to sign a contract proriding for
a 10 per cent cut on their salaries to
last for !); days, at the end of which
time there was to be a restoration of
the old schedule. This the men re
fused to sign, and it is stated that
some of the men talked strike before
tney would accept such a proposi
tion. Jt is understood that the
chairman assured t hem that at sev
eral points along the srstem that the
men had accepted the proposition
