The Alters received yesterday an
evidence of the thoughtlessness of

ted at the camp grounds for prompt
delivery, in the shape of two letters.

received at this ollice Friday and the
other Saturday. The instance shows
how little some people regard the im

The dissecting-room scene in Lin
coln J. Carter's new play, "The Tor
nado," which will be seen at Harper s
theatre tomorrow night is one of the
most attractive scenes of the par-
formance, perfect in ist detail. The
action of the storv during the scene
s the very essence of quiet and re
fined intensity. At its close, as the
urtain slowly falls, the vounsr
husband and surgeon, alone with his
great joy, a storm of appreciative
and sympathetic applause invariably
conies from the audience. It was
this feature of the new play which
was awaited by Mr. Carter's ad
mirers, with a possible doubt as to
his ability to keep it free from grue
some shades, but the reception ac
corded the scene at the first produc
tion seined, bevond a doubt the
complete triumph of the feature.
When a Rattlesnake Feels Surprise.
Tho pis treats the snake with disre
spect, not to say insolence nothing,
ophidian or otherwise, can fascinate a
pig. If yonr back garden is infested
with rattlesnakes, yon slumld keep pigs.
The pig dances contemptuously on the
rattlesnake and eata him with much rel
ish, rattles and alL The 'last emotioft of
the rattlesnake is intensf astonishment,
and astonishment is natural in the cir
cumstances. A respectable and experi
enced rattlesnake, many years estab
lished in business, has been accustomed
to spread panic everywhere within ear
and eye shot. Everything capable of
motion has -started off at the faintest
rustle of his rattles, and liis view of ani
mal life from those expressionless eyes
has invariably been a back view and a
rapidly diminishing one.
After a lifelong exjierience of this sort.
to be unceremoniously rushed upon by a
common pig, to be treated as so much
swill, to be jumped upon, to tie flouted and
6nouted. and finally to be made a snack
of this causes a feeling of very natural
and painful surprise in the rattlesnake.
But a rattlesnake is onlv surprised in
this way once, and he is said to improve
the pork. Arthur Morrison in Strand
