MILITARY PANDYISM
REBUKED.
A rotemporary tells the fol-i
lowing good anecdote of a 'set
ling down which an officer of
the "Younited States Awmy"
received in his presence. Our
writer says :
We were travelling awhile
since cmone of the Sound boats
where we met on deck just af
ter breakfast, our old acquaint
ance, John Barstow Col. John
Barstow, who has bought and
sold more horses than any oth
er live taan, it is said, in the U.
States. While we were ex
changing the ustfat salutations
of the morning, the sharp tones
of the hand biell were heard
ringing along the deck, and the
almost as sharp voice of the
steward was heard crying out
"All dem passengis as has not
settle defr passage, will plea.se
step up to de captin's oflis aud
settle." .
There were many passengers,
and, of course, as usual, a great
crowd of peesons were gather
ed around the "Captin's offis,"
each quietly awaiting his turn
to pay. Suddenly a tall robust
j'oung man . elbowed his way
through the mass of people up
to the- window, and stretching
out h money to the clerk, said
in a very lomJ tone
"Take my fare, sir."
"What name, sir?" said llie
clerk, as he received the bills.
"Captain- Victor Henry Dig
amma, sir Captain Digamma
and lady, of the Younited States
Awmy, sir 1" was the reply in
a very pompous and conceited
voice.
This was' rather too-much for
our acquaintance, the horse dea
ler. He passed rudely through
the crowd, and loudly address
ed the clerk,-while the captain
of the' awmy yet stood by, and
the people seemed' to be think-j
ing'whether tb lynch him or not. i
"Take my fare, sir." j
"What name, sir?" inquired, j
the" clerk, meekly. j
"Korp'ril John Barstow, sir, i
Korp'ril Barstow- and horse,
sir, of . the Conneticut Milisliy,
sir!" was his answer, delivered
id a most comically pompous
tone.
How blank;- that army captain
lookedj and what good-natured
crowd that1 was immediately af
ter this answer, only those can
understand whose imagination
can picture reality. They
laughed consumedly.
Marrying a deceased Wife's
Sister. The Court' of Queen's
Bench, England, has recently
decided against the legality of
all marriages made w ith a de
ceased wife's sister. By- this
decisional! Wch marriages are
cancelled, and declared null and
void the wives are placed in
the light- of concubines, the
children of strch marriages de
, dared illegitimate, and all he
reditary rights and claims to
property utter abrogated.'- -
Cheap Postage.'-' The excess
of receipts over- expenditures
for the current fiscal year is es
timated at three hundred thou
sand dollars I This is the expe
rience, of only three years un
der great disadvantages, and in
the infancy of the experiment
of cheap postage.
CItis not known where he
why iftvented the- plough, was
born, or where he died, yet he
has effected more for the hap
piness of man than the whole
race of conquerors.
The debt of the U. States
government is now $70,000,000.
