DEATHS' DOINGS
Tho sud news was received here
Tuesday noon of tho death of Col.
J. M. Knight nt his home in Ashe
ville at 9.42 that morning, after i\
lingering illness.
John was n fine young, and made
his first start in thc DEMOCRAT of
fice. Step by step he rose, from n
printer to druggist, then a teacher,
married and returned to his first
love. He lived in Clarendon for
some timo then moved to Sumter,
and was editor niul proprietor of thc
Herald. He \v:\s county chairman,
until failing health forced him to
give up all work, when ho went to
Asheville, hoping to regain health.
He leaves n devoted wile, five
children, a widowed motlier, two
sisters and three brothers.
Thc remains were brought down
to Sumter Wednesday afternoon and
laid to rest in the cemetery there.
