LAW-BREAKING
There has been much excite
ment in our busy little city this
week and scores of jurors have
been in demand. A case was
lodged by City Attorney Thomas
against the unlawful dispensing
of "spirits feruienti." The case
has been vigorously contested
and there was great difficulty to
Secure qualified jurors. A jury,
however, was finally secured and
the case was tried, and after an
all night session and the jury re
turned a verdict of eight to four
for conviction.
This is a most important case
for if this law-breaking- is going
on, every - law-abiding citizen
should "stand pat" to see that
the breaker is brought to justice.
This Valley was founded on a
prohibition basis, and many peo
ple have come here because of
the fact that there were no
saloons. These people are the
making of every moral commun
ity, and with the law behind the
right, these immoral, law-break
ing citizens will have to close
shop or move camp.
On the front page appears an
article showing- what can be
accomplished in twelve months
in Imperial Valley. Where else
in this broad land of ours that
extends from ocean to ocean, are
there opportunities that will
surpass, or even equal, the op
portunities that are fast ripening
in this fertile Valley that was
once a barren desert. Par from
the snow and ice and bitter cold
we plant our crops and till our
soil. While our cattle are peace
fully grazing upon green fields
of grain half as high as them
selves, the cattle of the frozen
regions are shivering in barns,
halt fed with the feed of last
year. This is a land of great
promise that increases in value
da} T by day. A land that pro
duces two yearly crops and pays
double mouey.
Since the former editor of the
Pkuss has become owner of the
"Register of Events" at the bor
der town, he sees in Ensenada "a
good harbor opening into the
broad Pacific," while San Dieg-o
used to be the ideal harbor. Why
these changes?
We have an abundant water
supply in Imperial Valley at
present and we can continue to
plant our Crops ana reap our har
vests and when the Government
is ready we will be "Johnnie on
the Spot."
BRAWLEY
Happenings of the Week
From (he North End.
William Hunter, a prominent merch
ant of Moscow, Idaho, is visiting the
Valley and is greatly impressed with
its superior advantages. He is con
vinced that this will soon become one
of the great agricultural districts of the
west.
C. S. Mead of Yakima, a prominent
land owner both there and in tlie Val
ley, is looking over his interests near
15 raw ley and marks the change for the
better that is constantly going on. The
crops are convincing proof of what the
Valley can and will do when called upon.
Leroy Keener is expecting his wife
and sister in Brawley soon. They will
become permanent residents and we
can congratulate ourselves in securing
such citizens. They have selected
Brawley as the right place in which to
live and had there been a more charm
ing place in the State of Idaho, they
would not have come all the way from
Moscow to settle here. They will be a
valuable acquisition to the town and
receive a cordial welcome from her
people.
Peter P. Hovley, president of the
Brawley Farming & Experimental Com
pany, visited Coachella this week look
ing up the secret of growing canteloupen.
The Valley will produce them as well
as the Coachella country, and the
future looks bright for a large harvest
of melons the first year. Operations
will begin at once and at the meeting
of Saturday nearly' 300 acres were
pledged by the farmers to be planted
to melons. We expect to live on melons
after the middle of May, and of course
all our acquaintances will then want to
pay Brawley a visit.
A petition was circulated this week,
remonstrating against the proposition
of the rail road to transfer Mr.
Butcher, our agent and operator, to a
different station. The people with one
mind asked the R. R. to let us have
something that we wanted and not re
move anything that they had acci
dentally given us. The Butchers have
a host of friends in Brawley.
Judge Holloway is hauling his corn
to market and judging from the num
ber of teams, the size of the loads, and
the time consumed in hauling it, we
are convinced that the Judge had a
large and valuable crop. The farmers
are beginning to deiive substantial re
turns from their summer labor.
11. C. Oakely of Los Angeles, is look
ing after his landed interests about
Brawley.
J. J. Miller is walking on a leg and a
half, an anvil fell upon his foot and ho
is using that leg with groat care and
caution.
A Pleasant Afternoon
The Ladies Aid Society of the Christ
ian church gave tv reception to the
Indies of Imperial, at the residence of
Mrs. L. C. Vickrey Wednesday from
2:30 to 5:30 p. in.
This proved to be one of the most
enjoyable social gathering of the season
and whh attended by about forty ladies.
Light refreshments were served and
all were tilled with Unit genial and
social spirit that goes to make such
gatherings a succees.
The object of this reception was that
the ladies of Imperial may become
better acquainted, and that others may
desire to count themselves, with us in
our effort tv do good,

RANCH DEVELOPMENTS
Continued from I'age 1
would seoin to he no doubt as to tlio
tilling of the Imperial Valley soil. The
above facts when condensed hliovv the
following achievements, nil accom
plished within a period of twnlvk
months : —
Thirteen hundred acres of land cleared,
leveled, bordered and ditched, on part
of which the TinnD crop is now above
ground. Grain to the amount of 400
acres harvested and sold.
A corn corp of 400 acres raised, part
of which was pastured and the rest
Three hundred and eighty-five head
of cattle to bo turned off for beef.
About 350 hogs grown and fattened.
Besides these farming and stock oper
ations, the Wheeler ranch boasts of
1500 cottonwood trees, some 30-feet
high, besides a few peppers, eucalyp
tus and palms. Men are now at work
planting 3000 more cotton woods. A
gravity system conveys the water to the
house, barns and corrals. The barn
yard is well filled with all kinds of ma
chinery and with the completion of the
new residence contemplated by Mr.
Wheeler, any resident of Imperial Val
ley will have just cause to be jealous of
the achievements of this well managed
place.
In New Quarters
Win.- Wessel, the furniture dealer
who for the past year has run a store
on east Ninth street, has moved to his
new quarters in the two story brick
lately erected by R. F. Garner on the
corner of Ninth street and Imperial
avenue. Here Mr. Wessel has a large
modern store room where he can dis
play the new and complete stock of
furniture which is arriving daily. Here
will be found anything you want in the
furniture line. Anything from a single
canvas cot to the finest quartered oak
bed room set. The store is so full of
household furnishings that space will
not allow a mention of all. Come and
see, you are always welcome.
Another Case of Rheumatism Cured
by Chamberlain's Pain Balm
The efficacy of Chamberlain's Pain
Balm in the relief of rheumatism is be
ing demonstrated daily. Parker Trip
lett of Grigsby, Va., says that Cham
berlain's Pain Balm gave him perma
nent relief from rheumatism in the
back when everything else failed, and
he would not be without it.
