Baturd*jr, March 27, 1 >O*. APHIS DESTROYERS COME. Million* of Lady Bugs Set at Liberty In Imperial Valley. Millions of lady bugH have been (Urned loose in Imporial Valley tho past two weeks, to make vigorous war or the melon aphla. It is expected that the depredations of this army of lady bugs will keep the aphis pest down to a condition where the can taloupe growers will note but little damage to plants. This wan one of the practical re sults of tho recent visit of the demon stration train. Prof. Kdward K. Carnes, who is in churge of the in secretaryof the University of Califor nia, and who accompanied the parly on this train, brought the supply of bugs to the valley and liberated quan tities of them at each slopping place. He states that placing the lady bugs in this field at. such an early stage will be of great benefit to the melon and vegetable growers, an the bugs will at once begin the attack on the larvae of the aphis, at which period they get in their most effective work. Prof. Carnes talked very interest ingly of these bugs while in El Cen tro, and is enthusiastic over the re sults possible to attain if care is giv en the project of bringing in sup plies of them at regular periods. As the lady bugs subsist principally on the aphis it Is likely they will die dur ing the summer months, and next year a new stock will have to be brought In and set at liberty through out the valley. The bugs can be gathered by the quart in the northern sections of the Pacific Coast and Mr. Carnes believes that the valley ranchers would do well to provide for the gathering of lar^o quantities, which could be secured simply for the cost of gathering and the expressage. The insects which were liberated here were gathered in northern Wash ington, where they hibernate for. the winter months. It is said that in some parts of that country the ground for acres is covered with these bugs, and sometimes. are found in piles two and three feet deep. Prof. Carnes says: "I have seen the ground for acres in some places sim ply red with lady bugs. They have a peculiar means of keeping warm,. by piling in great heaps. The insects on the outside become chilled and start to burrow into the pile, and this crowds out those at the bottom of the heap. When they strike the cold air they in turn begin to burrow in, and by this continual struggle enough heat is ganerated to sustain them until spring arrives. "The bugs could be gathered by men in the north who will work for $1.75 per day, and the expressage on a large quantity would not be heavy. I shall be glad to give any information I can to anyone interested in ""secur ing a further supply of these aphis destroyers for the Imperial Valley, and letters for me may be addressed to Sacramento." No particular care was given the bugs when they were liberated as it. is believed they will at once begin their search for food on any vegetable growth which is covered with aphis. RUSH OF COLONISTS. Great Movement of Homeseekers and Tourists to California. A dispatch from Chicago says the colonist traffic to California tills sea son promises to be about equal to that of 1907, which was the heaviest on record. During the spring of 1905 this move ment amounted to 39,000 persons; in the following year it was 33,000; in 1907 there were 48,000 persons who took advantage of the low rates to get to the Pacific Coast, and last year there were 23,500, the depressed times serving to keep people at home. The spring of 1907 was the best in the history of the country. Last year the roads increased the rate, and this action also had the ef fect of reducing the amount of travel. This year the roads have lowered the rate to the basis of 1907, and the ef fect has been that the entire move ment promises to be nearly double that of last year. EARLY APRICOTB. E. K. Forreßter brought to The Press office, laßt week, a twig from one of his apricot trees on his ranch, west of Bl Centro, that was set with twenty apricots as large as marbles. The twig was sent to Los Angeles for the Imperial county display. Mr. Forres ter has a half acre Bet to these trees, of the niemheim variety, and all are set so full that they will have to be thinned out. BUYB VALLEY HAY. The bid of J. C. A. riowell, of Howell's American School, Havana, Cuba. "On the night of February 3rd our baby was taken sick with a very severe cold; the next day was worse and the following night his condition was desperate. He could not lie down and it was necessary to have him in the arms every moment. Even then his breathing was difficult. I did not think he would live until morning. At last I thought of my mother's remedy, Chamberlain's Cough Remedy, which we gave, and it afford ed prompt relief, and now three days later, he has fully recovered.
