Mr. Carson has accepted the Solic
itor's place in the 9th' Judicial District
tendered him by Gov. ( aldwell.
The Irishmen of Wilmington are
going to celebrate St. Patrick's Day
appropriately.
ThieState contains about 32,OO0,(K'O
acres of land, about six and a half
millions of which are under cultiva
tion. The people around Bald Mountain,
McDowell county, are being fright
ened by earthquake shocks. They
are of daily occurrence.
The Wilmington library Associa
tion has invited Gove- nor Vance to
deliver his lecture, "Scattered Na
tions," in that city some time soon.
The Charlotte Observer says that
there are 74 car loads of fertilizers at
the depot of the Air-Line road in
that city awaiting shipment South.
Wilmington receives from 050,000 to
750,000 barrels of rosin, and 50,000
barrels of tar per year. The State
produces about 1,500,000 barrels oi
turpentine annually, valued at about
$3,375,000.
William Wilson, who killed the
Robeson outlaw, Andrew Strong, and
received $5,000 from the State for so
doing, recently committed suicide in
Fayetteville. He was a hard drinker.
Our friend Maj. J A. Engelhard,
of the Wilmington Journal, is spoken
of in connection ith the candidacy
for congress in the 3d district. He
would make an excellent representa
tive. ilaj. Nat. A. Grpgory, one of the
most intelligent farmers in, Gniivillc.

the Agricultural Editor of the Caroli

A paper called The Mutual is soon
to be published at Charlootte. It is
to be edited jointly by tho younjr
ladies of the Charlotte Institute and
the Cadets of the Military Institute.
Th? gin-house of Gen. M. W. Ran
som, Northampton, was destroyed by
fire on Tuesday last. Some 5(J bales
of cotton were burned. It caught
from sparks from tho engine with
which the machinery was run. No
insurance.

tain contingencies (which will be made
public shortly) an agent will bo ap
pointed to canvass this State ia the
interest of free schools, especially
graded Bchools. The expenses and
salary of this officer will be borne by
the Peabody School Fund.
It is said that even before the
breath had left the body of Captain
Betts, Superior Court Clerk of Gran
ville, Judge Watts, who has the ap
jxjinting power, received a number
of telegrams solict.ng tho appoint
ment. Eleven deaf mute pupils of tho In
stitution for the Deaf and Dumb and
the Blind were baptised Sunday even
ing at the Salisbury street Baptst
church in Raleigh. A large number
of the pupils of the institution have
recently connected themselves with
the Edenton street Methodis church.
The Wilmington Journal say3 the
Legislature j ust ended, is the shortest
regular session that has been hell
since Reconstruction hegan. In 16,
the so-called Legislature met in
special session in July and eat for f r-ty-five
days. It met aain on the
lGth of November in the same year
and sat one hundred and forty eight
days, five months lacking two day,
with the exception of two weeKs
during the Christmas holidays. The
same body met again on the 15t'i of
November, 1800, aud sat for one hun
dred and thirty-lour days, with the
exception of the usual Christmas hol
idays. In 1870 the Conservatives got con
trol of the Legislature. T o session
of that w nter lasted only on j hundred
and fifteen days, including ti:n forty -four
days of the trial of the impeach
ment ol Governor IIoi.dkn. 'I he 8 8
sion of the waiter of 111-72, lasted
only seventy five- days; the tession of
1872 '73 lasted eighty days; and the
session just endel, lasted o:ly suvu-ty-two
days.

The best news that we have had
this winter from Columbia comes in
the shape of nn announcement that
tb Legislature is to adjourn at the

of the country they inhabit, tends to
place the scoundrel class at the sum
mit of affairs.
A Nevada judge, after tho jury had

1 Tue Gkange. Last Friday a council of
the Granges of Edgecombe county was
held at their hall in Tarboro for mutual
discussion, advice and co-operation. Not
withstanding the inclemency of the weath
er most of the granges were represented,
and the occasion was doubtless one of prof
it as well as pleasure. As to the pleasure
there can be no doubt (for who says a good
dinner is not pleasant ?) the council having
been treated to a spleudid repast, prepared
by Messrs. Jno S. Dancy, E. Cherry, 11.
