Cumpsten, who has been ill with typhoid fever the past two weeks is improving. Little Lettie Gray Hull, daugh ter of Mr. and Mis. W. H. Hull. who has been seriously ill with typhoid fever for several weeks is improving slowly. Work is progressing satisfac torily on the splendid hotel at Malaga. It is being erected by the Misses Alkire and Horton,- who will conduct it. B. L. Walker, the efficient and painstaking road overseer of Dint. John Nymeyer, with a crew of men. is at work grading a new wagon road paralleling the rail road track to Malaga. This road when completed, will be three or (our miles shorter tnan the old road. J. II. Cornett is about again after a severe attack of la grippe. Air. Lornett is iz years or age and is a land mark in this vioin ity, coming here some eighteen years ago. Robt. F. Green, has recently cleared, broke and put into ex cellent condition his forty-acre tract about one mile south of town., This land will be planted to cotton. The Pecos Water Users' Asso ciation is receiving an unusual njmber of inquiries in regard to the Carlsbad Project of late. over fifty letters having come in this week. Rom Holt and Will Dannelley came in last bunday from two weeks stay on their Plains ranches. They report cattle do ing well and grass good for this season of the year. Bernie Mullane returned Mon day from Roswell, where he has been in the employ of the Ros well Printing Co., and has ac cepted the position of loca editor on the Current. W. E. Washington of Lake Ar thur was in town yesterday. Mr, Washington expects to make his home in the valley for the future being now engaged in erecting a tine residence in Lake Arthur. While playing with the chil dren of Mr. and Mrs. Will Green of Lone Tree, a little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lon Hord had the little finger of the right hand cut oil. 1 he little ones were scrap ing dirt with their hands while me nine ooy was chopping up the dirt to loosen it. One got her little hand too close and lost a finger in consequence. W. M. Reed, district engineer, returned from the west Wednes day, where he attended the mid winter conference of Reclamation Engineers. He also visited work now under construction in Ari zona. Jacob J Smith, the popular tailor, has purchased the resi dence property next door north of the B. A. Nymeyer home from C. D. Rickman and is busy erect ing a fine addition to the origi nal house. Mrs. N. E. Thurmond, who has been here for six months, departed this morning for the home of her sister, Mrs. L. L. Coleman, near Oasis, and near whose home Mrs. Thurmond has a homestead. Richard Thorne, the under taker, was called to Dayton yes terday, to take charge of the body of Tom Loehr, who was tel ephone operator at that place. The remains were shipped to Neblesville, Indiana. t Geo. The Carlsbad Fire Department gave a supper to its members Wednesday night of last week, j which was the most enjoyable affair of the season. The Ladies Aid Society of the Baptist church of Florence will give a pie supper tonight. Bert Schwcrdtfeger, wife and baby, of Lincoln, 111., came in Tuesday, and will begin house keeping at once. They expect to remain about a year for the ben efit of Mr. Sc h werd tfeger's health. Mr. Schwerdtfeger is a nephew of the late Mrs. II. A Houser, and will be remembered by many Carlsbad people as hav ing visited here some four or five years ago. Water was turned into the ca nal Wednesday to wet it up and get it in proper shape for carry ing a full bead or water in a few days, The engineers find it nec essary to be especially careful at the flume. Concrete headgates are being rapidly constructed on the canal. A torce of men are strung from gate No. 10 1-2 at Vineyard Stoek Farm on down along the canal. The Woman's Home Missiona ry Society of Methodist church gave a surprise party in honor of Mrs. Mary Thome, at her home last Friday. E i g h teen of the members of tho society were present at the gathering, the surprise being to present Mrs Thorne with a handsome brooch. which was done by Mrs. A. Moore, in the name of the socie. ty, with a few well chosen words. B. L. Walker sustained a pain ful, though not serious, injury Friday last, in an encounter with an unruly bronco. Mr. Walker was endeavoring to educate the animal into the mysteries of sin gle harness, and in the course of the inevitable seance, horse and man became entangled in the trappings, resulting in a fall, and unfortunately for Mr. Walk er, the horse landed on top, thoroughly blacking one or Joe s eyes and bruising up his counte nance considerably. Reed, anil which fre quently made night hideous to the people of Carlsbad tlurr, the fall and winter, are good wolves now. They were bought by "Red" Moore and taken out to a sotol camp where one was killed by Mrs. P. htcheverry who shot it last Saturday. The first one was killed by lied lor his skin which he will have mount ed. Henry Edmunds, home time bookkeeper for the Public Utili ties Co., at this place, departed last Saturday morning for nag- erman, to accept a similar posi tion with the Joyce-I ruit Co., there. During his residence here, some two years and a half, by his irentlemanly und cour teous bearing Mr. Edmunds has made a host of friends who are loath to hear of his change of base, but who wish him every success in his new field- C. Mr. W a I k er has been visiting his brother here for two months, recuperating from the eirects of a severe at tack of sickness during the sum mer. He gained rapidly while here, and is returning to his home to resume his regular rou tine work on his large stock farm there, which is stocked with fine horses. Mr. Walker is loud in his praise of the Pecos Valley and its matchiess climate. Frank Allen of Tennessee was admitted to t h e Eddy county hospital Thursday of last week, being afflicted with tuberculosis. Allen came here about four months ago and has been work ing for the Buckeye Sheep Co., but his health failing ho was brought into vown and placed in the hospital as a county patient. The entertainment given by the Baptist Ladies Aid Society at the opera house Tuesday evening proved to be ouite a success. All those who took part in the play acquitted themselves creditably, ana many were the compliment-j ary expressions made by those who composed the large audi ence. A main feature of the evening's entertainment was the music furnished by local talent. Mrs. Dr. Parr favored the audi ence with "Through All Eterni ty," and her beautiful contralto voice was especially suited to the rendition of this splendid num ber. Dr. II . W. Sellers favored the audience with a pleasing ren dition of "The Song that the Anvil Sings. The house was comfortably packed, and about $116.00 was taken in. ' ill & Rives this week sold to I . M. Dr. Sellers is a genial fellow whom it is a pleasure to meet. Aside from that, he comes highly recom mended, having lately been chief surgeon and head physician of the Jewish Hospital Association of Imisville. Kentucky, at which place he acquitted himself most creditably. Dr. Sellers will be remembered favorably by many Carlsbad people, being the son of W. C. Sellers, the jeweler, and having spent a vacation here some three years ago.
