THE CLAYTON CITIZEN, 18, APRIL 13, 191 PROCEEDINGS OF THE BOARD Regular meeting of the official board j of the Town of Clayton, Tuesday even ing, April 11th, 1916, at 8 p. m. Present: Mayor H. J. Hammond; Trustees Christian Otto, T. H. Rixey, Carl E. Eklund. Order of Business 1. Minutes of last regular meeting read Moved by Mr. Rixey, seconded by Mr. Eklund that minutes be ap proved as read. Mr. Rixey, aye; Mr. Eklund, aye; Mr. Otto, aye. Carried. 2. The Clayton Fire Department was present at the meeting and rep resented by M. P. Harvey, requested assistance in the purchase of better fire equipment. Moved by Mr. Ek lund, seconded by Mr. Rixey that the mayor appoint a member of the board to meet a committee of the firemen and ascertain their needs. Vote Mr. Otto, aye; Mr. Eklund, aye; Mr. Rix ey, aye. Carried. 3. Clayton Fire Department re quested to donate license fee to the Department for the coming carnival. Moved by Mr. Eklund, seconded by Mr. Rixey that request will be granted only on condition that the Carnival Company enters into a contract to pay not less than 10 per cent of the total receipts to the fire department 4. A motion was made by Mr. Rix ey, seconded by Mr. Otto that the notes in favor of the Fire Department be renewed with interest due included. Mr. Rixey, aye; Mr. Otto, aye; Mr. Eklund, no. Carried. 5. W. L. Tolley petitioned the board to secure water main extension, in order to give that part of the town in which he lives better water service. It was considered advisable to not take immediate action. 6. Mr. H. W. Magruder, manager of the Liberal Light and Power Plant, Liberal, Kansas, interviewed the board in regard to employment as construc tive engineer and called attention to the necessity of early action in the preliminary work, as material of all kinds is advancing rapidly in price, with no prospect of a drop. The board deferred action until such time as it is in position to enter into contracts. 7. March bills presented, and 0. K.d Moved by Mr. Eklund seconded by Mr. Rixey that bills be allowed. Jones, Clerk of the Town of Clayton, New Mexico, bare can vassed the votes in the presence of Grant Denny, Justice of the Peace of Mt." Dora, New Mexico, of the town election held on April Fourth 1916, for the election of Mayor, four Trus tees, Treasurer and Clerk and the issuance of bonds to the amount of $55,000.00 and verify the statement of the election judges to the following results: T. H. Rixey received 162 votes for Mayor, Carl E. Eklund received 19ft votes for Trustee, Christian Otto re ceived 189 votes for Trustee, Fulgen cio C. de Baca received 168 votes for Trustee, Morris Herzstein received 163 votes for Trustee, H. C. McFad den received 182 votes for Treasurer, M. R. Jones received 317 votes for Clerk, For Bonds, 158 votes cast as follows: For Bonds, 149; against bonds 9. M. R. JONES, Clerk. (Seal) Town of Clayton. GRANT DENNY, Justice of the Peace. Mt. Dora, New Mexico. New York Capitalist Organizing a Ranch Company Geo. De Haven, of New York City, real estate man and capitalist for whom the Union county town was named, was in Clayton Wednesday in company with D. C. Traister, of De Haven. They were returning from a business trip to Raton. Mr. De Haven, it is reported, is now promot ing a gigantic ranch proposition, back ed by a company having a working capital of $500,000. Curley's Place Opens Curley Lehr, the popular cafe boy is now ready for business in his new quarters in the Walters building. When the finishing touches are applied Curley will have one of the neatest places in this part of the country. The new place is called the "Silver Moon." Dairy and weather thermometer. At Haydon's, in the Mission building. STEAD Jack Zurick made a business trip to Clarendon, Texas, last week. J. J. Brown made a trip to the county hub this week for supplies. Col. Bill Brown and B. F. Cooper made a trip to the breaks after posts and say, it's work to get them. Still a little dry but farmers are still in hopes of a good crop season as there is plenty of time yet to plant. Mrs. O. P. Stead is spending a week or so visiting friends and rela tives at Texline. Farrell, who recently filed, west of the Penibetis creek, has his new house about completed. We understand that the Stead base ball team will play a return game with Vance, next Saturday on their own ground at Stead post-office. Born To Mr. and Mrs. Sam Solo mon, last week a fine boy. The little fellow was pretty ill for a few days but is getting along fine at present Quite a number of our baseball fans followed our team to Vance last Saturday and rooted the boys into winning the game from the Vance team. Total 2,057.68 8. By action duly taken, the clerk was ordered to consult the city at torney in regard to the necessary legal proceedings to place the bonds on the market. 9. The clerk was ordered by the Board to pay the long standing ac count with the Texas Oil Company, $59.04 in full. 10. The canvass of the votes of the votes of the town election held on April 4th, 1916, wns read and result of the judges count verified and same duly ordered filed with the town rec ords. Certificates of Election were issued to the elective officers. 11. Board adjourned to be re-convened at their discretion. Approved: Guy L. Bean made a trip to the county seat with a load of shelled corn. The farmers still have some for sale. The Farmer's Society of Equity is preparing a program for the entertain ment of their friends at the Stead school house on Saturday night the 22nd. Everybody is invited. Tom Foust, who bought the B. F; Cooper place, is having a well dug, the first of the kind in this part of the country. He thinks he will get plenty of water at 30 feet. Attest: Mayor. Clerk. ' "Happy Jack" Rob Rurman Killed Bob Burman, the auto speed king, met death Friday afternoon when his racing car threw a wheel and crashed through a fence at Corona, Calif., in the 97th lap of the race.
