Until the last few weeks ho town of Socorro had sacarcely beeu heard of outside of the territory, and even at home no one tully appreciated, the grand future assumed to the city by the vast wealth hidden ia the sur rounding mountains. Now the name is heard iu all parts of tho territory and is beginning to be known throughout the length and breadth of the land. The reason for this sudden spring ing into life are obvious; difficult roads and long distances made trans portation almost impossible, and had killed almost all busiuess, and had put an effectual embargo on all enter prises requiring tho use of all heavy machinery or material. Years ago the mines near the city were known, but could not be profitably worked under tho then unfavorable surround ings. A few months ago it became evident that the railroad would be completed to this placo during the present summer and a corps of ex perienced miners 6warmcd -into these long neglected mineral fields. Extraordinary activity in prospecting has been exhibited of late, and at this time there are more locations work ing, or ready for work, within thirty miles, than in any similar extent of territory in tho country which has been prospected for even twice as long. From J. M. Robinsen, geologist and mining engineer tor the railroad com pany, and G. E. Patrick, of tho Uni versity of Kansas, who visited the Magdalenas, spending several days there, some facts of general interest have been obtained. They found an immense quantity of mineral, much of which could almost be worked with profit for the lead alone, while all of it carries, silver hi greater or jess quantities. One lead in particular is mentioned. It was traced for a couple ef miles, is many feet in thick ness, an average assay giving twelve ounces of silver, and about thirty per cent of lead, so after reduction a ton of the lead would contain about $40 worth of silver. This of course ren ders this deposit very valuable, while if higher grade of ore be found to he reduced with the product of this vein the value would be proportionally greater with no added cost for trans portation of the lead to market. The principal openings on this vein are the Imperial, Jaunita, Graphic and Kelley. A largo number of claims have been located and work is going on all over the district. It Í3 understood that E S. Stover, of Alburquerque, Mr. Ilut- chason, of this city, and their associa tes place a very high price on tbeir claims. It is also stated that a smelter is on thej way from Toledo and will soon be erected there. G. W. Franklin, one of the owners of the Merritt mine is also largely in terested in the Magdalenas. A few mile9 northwest oí here the mountains appear to make a bend to the casi, and in the angle thus formed in plain, sight of town, tie now famous Limitar mines are lo- cated The veins are broad, well de fined, easily worked and yielding rich returns. Louis Proto, George Norton and other parties are work ing on their claims. Every person holding a claim, er working n a mine has the most unbounded faith in the future of the mines and that faith appears to be founded, on cold acts. Four miles east of the town a vein has been discovered which contains a large per cent, of copper and also carries silver- ore. This lead has been traced bevcral miles and is found again in the La Joya district. This vein will be worked before lon, and will probably be valuable for copper without the added value of silver. The Socorro mines, three miles from town are too well known to need more than a passing meption In sight of towu are the iltrritt and Torrcnce on which work ;is'pushed rapidly. A little farther' north are the mines of the Manzanares com pany. Half way up the' sido of the mountain a white tent shows that some miner is there at work. The wealth of the Mogollons, to the west, Hillsboro, to the southwest, and White Oaks, to tho southeast is conceded and Socorro is tho nearest point on the road from which parlies can outfit to these districts, and pros pectors are taking; advantage of this fact and are starting from hereto those points. Sun. The Cost of Mining Machinery. As inquiries aro frequently made of us touching the ost of mining machinery, in giving what a Califor nia exchange gives as the cost of plant for the treatment of the gold ores in Nevada county of that State, we may add that machinery for the reduction of silver ores by milling is more costly than that for gold. The cost of machinery, says the Nevada Transcript, '.'depends entirely on the quality desired and considered necessary. Hoisting and pumping machinery, buildings tools, etc., including everything necessary to run a mine, capable to sink from 800 to 1,000 feet deep, all new and in first-class order, will cost in round numbers $10,000, Works can be put-up, however, for one-half or lss of this amount, capa ble of working and developing amine to considerable depth. A ten-stamp mill, buildings and machinery, in cluding all of the latest improvements and labor saving machinery for crush ing ore, and saving sulphurets and concentrations, new and in first-class order, will cost in round numbers $10,000. A twenty-stamp mill of like character will cost about $15,000, Each additional stamp, including other necessary additions, $500. Ex change. It is a pretty big job to grumble at tho United States successfully, but sometimes it becomes necessary todo so, if it does no other good than the satisfying of ones own feelings. The order of Postmaster General Maynard, cutting down the Star mail service on the Fort Bascom line from a daily to a tri-weekly service, went into effect Sunday, and was a3 unnecessary as it is unjust and inconvenient to a great number of people, who must of ne cessity depend on this route for their mails. This action of the Department necessitates the discharge of about half the men who hayc been engaged on the line, and the sale of about half of the stock. The post-office at Chap erito will be discontinued. The mails on this line hereafter leave Las Vegas on Mondays, Thursdays and Satur days. If petitioning will do any good everybody should lend a helping hand. We have ..no report.this morning, as a glance at this pago will show. The reason why we should nol have received one, is a question that we are not prepared to answer. The wires were all right; but that did not seem to make any difference; but we were told, by the operator, that Santa Fe had not had a'wire'for two weeks, consequently the business at that point had to be cleared up before the press report could be started, and we waited until half past two this this morning, and could wait no long er, and had to go to press without it. The Rev. Sheldon Jackson has been commissioned by the government to select eleven children from the Mo- quis, Pueblos and Apaches of Arizo na, to be educated at the Carlise In dian school, and is now in our sister Territory, making the selections. The loss would be but triflimg, were this reverend individual "selected" by some of the Apaches. He would make a good subject for a scalp dance Southwest. Our exchanges from all parts of the territory come to us daily replete with accounts of new and rich miner al discoveries, and every indication points to tho'often asserted fact that New Mexico must soon take her place at the head of "the precious metal pro ducing section of tho country. Eve ry mountain range within her bor ders is being thoroughly prospected with the'most susprising and flatter ing results. The total votes cast for President in 1824 were 352,662. It is expected that fully 10,000,000 votes will be cast this year, an increase of 3,000 per cent. In half a century. The increase each presidential year is about thirty per cent, over that of the previous elec tion. The New York Times says that it is rumored that Kelley and Tammany have formed a secret alliance with the Itepublicans to control the local pat ronage of the metropolis. A suit for $25,000 Tias been brought against the city of Augusta, Ga., or injuries to a child that had been gored by a cow running loose in the streets. It is suggested that after Dr. Tanner completes his forty days' record he ought to open an academy for the ad yancemcnt óf starvation among tramps. This is offered as a solution to the problem. '"What, shall we do with our tramps and Dr. Tanner ?" It is now reported that the Indian Territory is tobe invaded from all sides by thousands of settlers, in defiance of the Government order but nothing is known of it at Wash ington.
