The Knight Templars Will Prolialily Meet in San Fran cisco in 18S3. St. Julieu makes 2:15 on a Slow Track Maud S; Also Trots. A Fire at Fueolo Destroys the Reduction Works General Xeivs. New York, August 19 The clear ing house exchanges for the week are surprising only in ' the smalluess of their transactions in this city. Not for a long time have exchanges been as small as they were last week and allowances for differences in activity of stock speculation . accounts for not more than $60,000,000 leaving New York little more than on a level with its transactions for tho corresponding week. of '79 while nearly every city reports important increases as com pared with the corresponding week in '79. Public tables show that. New York has lost 18 1-2 per cent., and San Francisco 15-6 per cent. All other towns have gained, as follows : Boston, 51-3; Philadelphia, 22-3; Chi cago, 24-2; Baltimore, 19-8; St. Louis, 32-8; Cincinnati, 18-9: Louisville, 19-3; Pittsburg, 27-5; New Orleans, 49-9; Milwaukee, 25-3; P-ovideur-e, 22-8; Kausas City, 32-3; Cleveland, 39-6 Indianapolis. 11-1. Putting aside the unexplicable retur i from this city the other reports show a continuance of healthy business. All the larger cities gain in exchange more than the average advance in prices since Aug ust last and at some of the mining and especially tho manufacturing cities the gain- is very large. New Orleans however gains the more be cause its business last year Was par tially interrupted by the fever while the loss at San. Francisco is due to causes of a permanent character now well understood. At Lowell espe cially transactions are remarkably large and at no city except Syracuse, San Franeisoo.aud New York loes there appear to have been smaller business measured in quantities than was done one year ago. Under llie circumstances it is impossiblo to ic cept the return of exchanges as an in dicator of a real change in the volume of other than speculative . business though no explanation o i it has yet been found. Chicago, 111., August 19. The Times says : A democrat, an operator at Coal Creek, Fountain county, and importer of a large number of negroes from Virginia to work in the, coal pits is a candidate whose special lobby just now is negro colonization. A co-operator sent for the operator and demanded an explanation. The employer said he had been unable to secure other help and that the trans portation of blacks had cost him two thousand dollars; that thought of their voting had never entered his head and that he did not propose to be catechized about tho affair which was purely his own. The mines in ques tion are situated in Dan Vorliees old congressional district where tho tall sycamoro stated a few months ago that thousands of of men were out of employment owing to the ruinous financial policy of the republican party. Chicago, August 19. The com-j mittec on location of the next trien nial conclave of Knights Templars re ports to the grand commandery'in favor ot San Francisco as the placo of meeting in 1883. The commandery has not yet acted but as the report is unanimous they will probably en dorse it. The Sau Franciscans have oilcred large inducement to the con clave, it being understood that they agree to pay all expenses of Knights after they cross the missouri river on their way to California. They pre dict that there will be an immense attendance of Knights and visitors and are overjoyed at what they justly consider a great victory for the Pacific Coast. Their treatment of their friend which has been liberal handed and has in the highest degree hastened to secure a favorable con sideration of tho plan to hold the con clave in San Francisco and the in conveniences that weather and the bad managements which have character ized the meeting hero make the Knights desirous of better arrange ment in the future. Leadville, Colerado, August 19. St. Julian made the fastest time ever known on the Uondu Park track, 2:15 while trotting the third head of the free for all race to-day. The track is considered three to five seconds slow. So this record is considered his best. Maud S. undertook to lower her re cent record, 2:11 3-4 for a special pur se ot $3,000 but parted nfter going once around the track. She trotted one heat in 2:19 and shortly after took to speed but being nettled by her lode she broke on the third turn and the whole heat was so unsatisfac tory that the judges took no time, much to the disappointment of the betting crowd. Twenty minutes later she made a final attempt and trotted without a break and very handsomely in 2:19. Th3 turns of the' track are very bad, particularly the first. Berlin, August 19.
