A certain editorial writer on the staff of a Southern newspaper was In cllned to dllatorlneaa during certain periods of conviviality, and caused thereby much concern in the breast of the foreman of the composing room Just prior to the moment when the torms must go to press. But tho writ er was a part owner of the paper and could not woll bo discharged, since he occupiod the position of managing ed itor. Many times tho editorials were late and tho paper dolayed in gjing to press, but the delinquent writer al ways made good after a fashion. Finally he hit upon a scheme when he was called upon at the last momont for "copy" that may, in all Justice to expediency, bo called the art of gen tuo. The hour was very late and no lead ing editorial had gone to the compos ing room. In frantic haste tho fore man sent for the editorial writer, and only after half an hour was he located In a near-by saloon and much the worse for his dalliance there. He grasped tho Intelligence that he bad forgotten his leading column, and mado his way as fust as he could to his office. Snatching a piece ot copy paper In one hand, he caught up o copy of the New York Times with the other, and from it clipped a leading editorial, which he pasted on tho pa per. Then he wrote: "We cannot agreo with the Now York Times when It says:" The editorial of the Times was cop led, the paper went to press, and tho odltor back to the saloon. Now York Times. The astronomer, who was to lecture In the town hall, rested contentedly after his noonday meal. Don't Put Stings In Words. The girl with laughter In her eyes, a pleasant smile for everybody, of kind words and gentlo deeds, will be much more charming though far less beautiful than the girl of pretty face who Is "stuck uj," supercilious, disa greeable and has an exalted opinion of her own importance. While there Is a charm in the pret ty face there must be back of It womanhood in its perfection. The art of being a woman is indeed a great one. There are women who always do things right and there are others who always do them wrong. How often do we see this In public? A woman Imagines, often without reason, that somebody Is encroaching upon her rights. She cuts loose with a volley of angry words, making her self Intensely disagreeable, whoreas if she had spoken softly she would have accomplished far more and there would have been no Btlng in her j-rfn chicaKo Journal. r Ed.
