Sunny New Mexico the Common
wealth of the Great Southw
The Haven of the Homeseeker and a Land
of Health and Plenty.
Extract from a lottcr from In-1
diana, dated Jan. 2ith says: "Rain
fell on Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesday, followed with colder
weather and snow on Thursday
after which the weather moderat
ed and rain began falling. It is
now raining, the creeks and rivers
are at Hood, travel on country
roads is suspended. It is dreary
within doors and intolerable with
out. We long to see tho clouds
disappear and feel the warmth of
tho sun."
From a letter of tho same date
in Tucumcari, N. M., wo extract
as follows:
Tucumcari, N. M.,
Jan. 2-1, 1007,
Mr
Talk about sunshine in January,
wo have had it in Quay county
and the city of Tucumcari the last
few days to our heart's content.
No mud, no snow, no cold wcathor
and people in shirt sleeves and
women with peok-a-boo sleeves
aro a common thing in January in
Tucumcari. Men, women and
children aro seen driving here
every day. Tho last few days the
old hons have begun to cackle and
tho price of eggs have gone to tho
bottom this week. Tho farmers
aro plowing and the housowife has
already begun her garden. Tho
tomato plants are out and the cab
bage industry has started. Why
is it that our Indiana friend don't
sell his $50.00 to $100.00 an acre
land in that dismal climate and
come out to New Mexico whero he
may have better land ton times
over than his ever was simply for
tho homostead fees? Quay county
has secured over 2000 of now sett
lors the last year who havo found
things out and aro taking advan
tage of tho situation while thero is
yet time. Quay county has one
and a half million acres of public
lands and only about 300,000 acres
havo up to this time been home
steaded, so there is plenty of room
yet for thousands of sottlers who
are looking for rich soil and good
climate. Tho tanner can work

every nay in tho year More which
gives him a decided advantage
over the sections of the United
States where tho winters are so-
verc, and it is necessary for him
to stay in doors and shed his stock
for months at a time. The editor
of this paper has been living in

New Mexico fifteen years and
every year we like it better than
tho previous one. Sunny New
Mexico is good enough for us and
wo havo never had any other opin
ion but that the best of everything
is good enough for an editor. Wo
never could got much satisfaction
out of a chilly salt water breeze in
December because it cannot be
stopped by the heaviest overcoat.
Your teeth shake whether or no.
Wo havo nono of that out hero,
and the nights in the middle of
summer aro always cool enough
to sleep under a blankot. No
mosquitos, no ticks, no trouble
some insects of any character. It
is a well known fact that New
Mexico, Arizona and the stato of
Vermont are tho localities whore
people live longest. Wo have
natives here who live 100 years
and smoko cigarettes all their
lives. Now, as to what people do
hero to make a livelyhoocl: Our
farmers grow the best wheat in
est
the country, 25 to 50 bushels of
Indian corn, oats, millet, kaflir
corn, maize, fruit and vegetables,
alfalfa, broom corn, otc. and oir
stock people havo largo herds of
cattle and horses and tho territory
has live to ten million sheep. Our
wool industry is the greatest in
the southwest. Quay county ships
great quantities of wool each year.
Tho Tucumcari Wool Scouring
Plant turns out two and a half
to three million pounds of wool
a year. There is more money in
circulation in New Mexico accord
ing to population than in any stato
in the Union that wo know of.
The two local banks of this city
carry on deposit nearly half
million of dollars. Come out and
see for yourself.
J ho cuse of Lorenzo Sierra et
al charged with car breaking who
were to bo tried before (Jo I. He
man, woro dismissed on default of
prosecution. They wore arraigned
beforo Justico of the Peace Saxon
Wednesday undercharge of lar
cony of goods from tho Gross
Kolly people and were bound over
to await tho action of tho grand
jury in tho sum of 500.00 each.
J. C. Jones has commenced
moving dirt on his new buildinj
on tho corner of Second and (Jon
tor. This will bo right up to tho
standard of stone building that are
now sotting the pace in the growth
of rucumcari. This is enterprise
that everybody likes to see.

COMMERCIAL
CLUB MEETING
The Commercial Club met at
the call of the chairman at the
oflicc of Col. Heman Thursday
evening at 4 o'clock and among
other things which were before the
club for consideration an assistant
secretary and clerk was employed
and an office for the future home
of the club secured. A young
man by the name of Ganns who
has been in the employ of the
Jackson-Galbraith-Foxworth Co.
was employed as clerk and assis
tant secretary and the office secur
ed for the club is room No. 5 in the
new Israel block. Our school in
terests were discussed at length
and it was decided to have Prof.
Ware, Principal of the public
schools at the next public meeting
of the club and to ascertain from
him the exact condition of the
schools in the city, and Superin-
tendant of county schools M.
Rudulph to find out the condition
of the schools in the county. The
commerial club is not taking up
school matters in Tucumcari alom
but it is the intention of the mem
bership to find out what can be
done for the public schools of the
countv.
We are getting an immigration
here now that is going to want
school advantages and must have
them, so it is the object of the
club to organize a movement that
will improve the school facilities
of the entire county. The club al
so discussed the matter of adver
tising the resources of our county
in a way that the homeseeker may
acquire the information sought
about this county and city before
he comes out to look for himself.
The club looks at the situation in
this way, that anything that will
bring results to the county will
help Tucumcari, and it is the gen
eral prosperity of the county that
our people want. There will be a.
call for a public meeting at the
court house in a few days.
J. S. Shaft; and son M. B. Shaft
were in the city Wednesday from
Revuolto, and were tryiug to find
out the possibilities of establishing
a band in this city. J. S. Shall' is
considored one of the best band in
instructors in tho southwest, and
his son M. B. Shaft" is tho
strongest Baratoue among all tho
band organizations ot Oklahoma.
Tucumcari needs a band and this
is an opportunity to got one, and,4
wo should givo these people a show
to build a band for this city.
