How to manage a small farm to
make it pay. The first thing to do
is to select a good plot of ground,
brake it good and deep and then
put out a good variety of fruit trees
and vines and then take good care
of them. Provide yourself with a
good Hock of hens and roosters
and at the same time give them a
good roost house. Keep two or
three good milk cows and a brood
sow, and in this way you can sup
ply the table with plenty of good
fruit, butter and eggs. I always
try and plan my crop a year ahead,
lay my plans and work to them.
Never buy dead property, and
never go in debt for anything.
Don't blow too much about what
you are going to raise, how much
money you are going to make, but
study to show yourself a workman.
Make it a point to always attend
to your own business, read good
books and pattern ifter other good
men's ideas.
Take as much care of your horses
and other stock as if they were hu
man. Give them plenty to eat and
plenty of time to rest- Don't leave
your farming implements stand in
the fence corner from one season
to the next, but keep them under
cover when not in use.
What is said to be the oldest
apple orchard in America is in the
center of the ancient town of Man
zano, eighteen miles southwest of
Estanchia, Torrance county, New
Mexico. Many of the trees are more
than six feet in circumference, but
all are still fruitful and vigorous
although neglected for generations.
Little is known of the history of
this orchard, but the oldest inhab
itants of the valley of the Rio
Grande remember the orchard from
childhood, and claim that the trees
have not changed in appearance
since then. Venerable Mexicans
and Pueblo Indians tell of visiting
the orchard as far back as they can
remember, and finding apples on
the ground in all stages of decom
position at least two feet deep.
The Estanchia valley has been
peopled for ages, probably by the
kinsmen of the natives found by
the Spanish explorers at Gran
Quivera, Abo and other ancient cit
ies. Probably in the early days of
the Spanish occupation, some
Franciscan monk found his way to
Manzano and there planted this or
chard way back in the dim distanace
Now these ideas are encouraging
and wholesome, and the man who
will put them into practical use
will never come to want.
Yours truly,
Hayskkd.
