TO CLEAN WOOLEN FABRICS. From tlie sclentlllc Ainerlcan.J The l.eipziei-.Mu--tcr-Ceitung fur Kaer- berei, wliich is likaly to be good author- ity on such --ubjects, exprcssos jts views on cleaning woolens as follows; Oiiinions on the be-t inethoiU of clean ing woolens are so inflnitely tlill'erent, inil so variou- and contrndlctory arc the stateineiits ot practical papcrs on this jioint, that it appcars to me, suys the editor, a reniiinerative and iuteresting task to exainine the matter tlioroughlv. 1 tried thc various dcgrees of hcat. from the hottest to the cookt teniperatitre, ind I cinployed all the l'avorite cleaning uiaterials, one utter the other .-oap. bo rax, aniuionla, ben.ine and liiixtures of tlave articles. The rcsults wcre so de clded, and so plninly markcd that the lollowing conclusions mu-t be regardcd as detlnitclv cstablished: 1. The liiiuid used for washiug mu-t be n hot ns possjble. 2. l'or the ivmoval of greasy dirt. weat. etc, borax is of so little value that its applicatkm would be mere wate. Soap lye nlone is better, but the prefer ence mu-t be givcu to soap lve along with ammonla. This nilxture works wonders hy tpulckly dissoiviug dirt Irom particular parls of underclothing whlch ire hard to cleansc. It rale and revives evcn bright colors, and is altogether ex- cellent. 3. On the other hand, for cleaning white woolen goods tliere ls nothing whlch evcn approaches borax. Soap lye ind borax, appllcd boiling hot, glves white woolens a looseness and dazling whlteness whlch they often do not po- ess when new. I. If shrlnklng Is to be cntirely avold- ed, the drylug niust be accelerated hy rcpeatedly prc.-sing the woolens between sott clotll-. lu no case should woolen be let dry In the sun, as in this cae they beconie dry nnd hard. They arc bcst dried in n modcratc currcnt of air, nnd In cold weathcr lu a wartn place, not too near the stove. l'or colored goods tliere should be pre jiared a lye of seven ipiarts of soft wnter nnd two otinces of thc het soft .soap, the rmantitics bcing, of course, modilled ae- cordlng to judgmcnt and the dirtiiicss of the articles. Thc i-oap is dissolvcd ovcr the llre, nnd the lye, properly stirred up, ls dlvldcd Into two vessels, to one of whlch is uddcd a tcasiioouful of nuimouia for cnch ijuart of lye. Tho woolens niust bc entered at a hcat whlch the haud cannot beur, and the fabrlc must consequcntly be turned and pressed with smooth, wooden stirrers. They aro theii pressed out as far as posslblo, nnd trans ferred to the sccoud lyc, contaiiilng no ammonla, and whlch by thls thue hns bccouie so cool that thc articles can be pressed by hand, but no twistlng or wrluglng niust take place. They ure then pressed between three or four soft dry towels, till the latter no longer be coine wct. For white woolens tliere ls added, 1 ti stead of ammonla, a tcaspoonful of pow- dered borax to each (piart of soap lye, and the opcratlon Is otherwUo conductcd exactly ns above described. If the scc oud lyc Is too soapy, lt may be dllutcd 1 with a little hot water. After two or tlirec lots of woolens liave tlius been wnshed, tlie lyc imit bc heated ngaln thc llrst lot belng put aslde to settlc, the sccoud beinp; niade llrst with the nddltlou of aiiiuionia or borax, as tlic case niay hc. and fresli lyc niade for thc sccoud. HOW TO JUUGE CANNED GOODS. I From Cti-Hcll'i Maguzliiu. A hlnt now ubout tlnned goods, nieat cspeelnlly. Xote, when about to pur chnse, tlic conditlou of thc tln; if bulged outwards, don't havc it, evcn as u gllt! We wlll explaln thc process of cnnnhi;, to give weight to our warnliif;. Tlie nieat Is packcd in tins whilc raw, then senlctl, and cooked lu an outer ves sel of bolllng watcr, witli sotnetimes an additlon of :i clieinlcal to ralsc the tcin pcrature. When cooked, the can Is picr ced, and, ns soon as tliu alr nnd stenin have been cxpelled. It Is soldcrcd. Kx perts known when lt is readv for solder iug; a inoinent too soon, aml tlie tuischlcf is douc, becausc if air is left lu, thc tin bulges, nnd tlic nieat wlll not be good. Un the contrary, If thc tln has sunk, lt Is au lufallible slgn of goodness; it proves a vacuuni, whlch Is nntural, as the nieat shrlnks when no air is left lu the tin. Sonie tnay say, what matter If air bc left lu the tin? Simply thls: nitrogcn, nn eleinent of alr, hnparts to bodles with whlch It coines In contact a tcndency to change and dccay. Often, on openlng a tin of prcscrved goods,- people are hcard to say "the alr ii escaping," intcad of whlch, tho sllght hissluj; sound Is the result of the air rushing in. unother jiroof tliat tliere was a vacuuni. Well, wc go as far as to sav tliat, nssuinlng tlie outward sign of good ness above referrcd to; a label bearliift the nainc of a goodcxporterorluiporter; and also a rellable vemlor of the article, whether nieat, llsh, lnllk, soup, or vegc table, the chances are a inlllion to one against nuy being injured, niucli less polsoned, hy titined goods. Auother cautlon, though: alwnys look out for any little globules of solder that .soinetinies llud their way Inside the tln ; and take care, specinlly in the casc of sahnon nnd lobster, to'cinpty the eon tents, as soon ns opcned, into nu earthen vesscl. Thls Is necessary for cvcrythlng cxccpt niilk. PACKING APPLES. "Hnndle npples ns you would hnudle eggs" is good advice. Old llour bat rels, unlc-s earefully washed and dried, will impart a niusty Ilavor to the Irult before niidwliiter, espcclnlly if the alr in the cellat- is nioist. The llrst applcs whTiTi arc put in market barrels should be "faccd." The tacing conslsts In placing two or three laycrs on the lowcr head with stenis down ; that is, with stems pointing toward the head. C'lean, bright npples of ordinary lze should be selected Ior thls purpose. Tho rest of the npples niay be poureil into thc barrcl. 'J'hls pouring. if iiroperly done, will not injure the applcs. Kggs can be poured. I'.-e n ba-ket with a swinging handlc, one which can be lowcred into tlie barrcl nnd turned whilc there, nnd hold the npples back with thc hand. so that they wlll not pour out too rapldly. Two or three times during thc tllling sbake the barrel gcntly to settle the applcs llnnly. Kace the upiicr head in the same inanncr as tlie lower one. It is deirahle not to head up the barrcl at once. C'ovcr with boards to kecp out tho rain, and let the barrels stand open four or tlve days. It is not. howevcr, always possible to covcr tlie barrels, in whlch cn-e they niay be lieadcd up at oncc nnd turned down on their -ides. In this conditlou they wlll shcd watcr. Aniericnn Agrlculturlst. SELECTING HEIFERS. I'aislug hcifers miuiiiIs well In thcory, but breeding c.ittle is a separato art Irom dalrying, and unless followed with grcat jiidginent is a lo-ing lmsiness, as not evcrv heifer raNed beconies a llrst-class mllch cow. The best plan is to buy heifcrs heavy with their llrst calves call ed "springers"; and in thls there is much more room for judgnicnt and skill lu making tliee selections than most inen are willing to adinit. The nilstuke usu- ally made is, lu belng iuNleil by a fancy for certain shaiies, colors and fnshionable points, to the neglcct of others relatiug iininediatelv to the usefulues of the inaturcd cow. The tirst jioint to consider is, that tho heifer i strong. with a deep ll.ink, indi- cating constltiitional vigor; then see that her teat are large and set widcapart. Viewed from bchlnd the twist should bc open and wlde, with her riulhnenlary uddcr well dl.-.played and teats farapart. As secondary and fancy points, a slhn neck, aud loug head with sinall horns aro good leatures. Above all thlngs, avoid thosc hcifers that show very sinall ruili- mentary teats, or tlioso with large ouos set close togcther. Such a heifer never can make u Hrst-cluss cow. There nre enough rlsks to run before securing a good one, wltliout startlngout with thoso that never can lmprove. Kven the best of podlgrces cannot make a good cow out of a heifer with a deforined udder. Those who have studlcd Guenon's method, whilc they do not rely upon lt to the exclusion of other points, llud It a great nid, and feel that they cannot Ignorc tho the cscutcheoii. Am.
