tA PECK'S BAD BOY WITH THE CIRCUS By HON. GEORGE W. PECK Author el "Peck's Bad &jy Abroid," Etc W (CbPirltflii ljr J. B. K-w Ta nnd the Bad Boy Stop Oft nt a Lively Western Town Pa. Buys Mining Stock and Takes Part In a Babbit Drive. Well, we are on tho way back home, after having engaged Indians, cowboys, rough riders and highway robbers to Join our show for next season. Pa felt real young and kltteny when wo ramo to tho railroad, after leaving our robber friends at the Hole In tho Wall, Tar Into tho mountain country. Wo came to n lively town mi thn mitmn.i where every other house Is a gambling house, and every other ono a plain saloon, and there was great excitement In the town over our arrival, 'cause thcro don't very many rich and pros perous people stop there. Pa had looked over tho money tho robbers had given him, to throw It away, because It was old-fashioned The Pony Tossed confederate money, when he . found that there was only one bundlo of con federate money, nnd the rest was nil good greenbacks, tho bundle of con federate money probably having been shipped, west to some museum, nnd tho robbers having got hold of it In tho dark, brought it along. Pa burned up tho bad money at tho hotel, and then ho got stuck on tho town, and said he would stay there a few flays nnd rest up, and incidentally break a few faro banks, by n system, tho way the smart nlcpks break tho bank at Monte Carlo. I teased pa n take the first train for homo, so wo could Join tho circus bo foro it closed tho season, and ho couhi I'eport to tho managers tho result of his business trip to tho west, but pa said ho had heard of n man who had a herd of buffalo on a ranch not far from that town, and beforo ho returned to tho show ho was going to buy a herd ,. Y& wm Pa Swung- nio of buffalo for tho cowboys and Indians to chnsu around tho wild west show. I cquldn't do anything with pa, so we stayed at that town until pa got good and ready to go home. Ho bucked tho faro bank some, but tho gamblow Boon found he had ho much money that ho could break any bank, so they tloscd up their lay-outs and bega,n to sell pa nduing stock in mines which wero fabulously rich If thoyonly had money to develop them. They salted borne mines near town for pa to ex ntnlnc, nnd when ho found that thev contained gqld enough In every shovel ful of dirt to make n man crazy, ho bought n whole lot of stock, and Uien tho 'gamblers entertained pa for all that was out. They got up dances and fandangos, and pa was it. sure, and I was proud of him, cause ho did not lose his head. He "just acted dignified, and they thought they wero entertaining a dis tinguished man. Everything would liavo gono all right, nnd we would have got out with honor, If It hadn't been for tho annual rabbit drlvo that came off while we wero there. Part of the country Is irrigated, and good crop3 aro grown, but tho Jackrabblts aro so numerous that they -come In off the pialns adjoining tho green spots, cit night, and eat everything lu sight, so once a year tho people get up a rabbit drlvo mm go out In tho night by the liuuJrcd, on horseback, and surround the country for ten miles or so, and nt daylight rldo nlong towards a corral, whero thousands of rabbits aro driven In and slaughtered with clubs. Tho men rldo close together, with dogs, and no' guilty rabbit can escape. Pa thougut It would bo a picnic, and bo wo went nlong, bt pa wishes that he had let well enough alono and kept out of the rabbit panic Those natives are full of fun, and on tuese rabbit drives fvy I , j . jfSSSSJLSI IW.H s--- - w .v-wjriL. ttV mMsmsyh iMWM&mam mWNmfUT they always pick out sotro man to have fun with, and they picked out pa as tho victim. Wo rodo nlong for a couple of hours, flushing rabbits by the dozen, nnd they Would run nlnnr? nhnml of us, and multiply, bo that when tho corral was in slgnt ahead the pralrlo was nllvo with long eared animate, so tho earth seemed to be moving, nnd It almost inndo a man dizzy to look at them. Tho hundreds of men on horseback had come In close together from nil sides, and when wo were within linlf n mllo of tho corral tho crowd stopped at a signal, and tho leader told pa that now was tho time io make n rnvnlrv charge on tho rabbits, and ho asked pa it no was afraid nnd wanted to go back, nnd pa said ha had been a sol dier nnd charged tho enemy; had been n politician nnd had fought In hot campaigns; had hunted tigers and lions In tho Jungle, nnd rodo bare backed In tho circus, nnd gone Into lions' dens, nnd been married, nnd he guessed ho was not going to show tho whlto feather chasing Jackrabblts. They could sound tho bugle chargo as soou as they cot readv. ami thnv wnnl.I 'find him In the game till tho curtain was rung down. That was what they wanted pa to say, so, ns pa'a horse was tired, they suggested that ho set on to n fresh horse, nnd pa said .all rlglit, they couldn't get a horse too fresh for him, and ho got on to a spjnky pony, and I noticed that thero was no bit In tho pony's mouth, but only a ropo around tho pony's nose, nnd I was afraid some- Pn in the Air. thing would happen to pa. I told him ho and I better dismount, and climb a mesqulto tree and watch the fun from a safo place. Pa said: "Not on your life; your pa Is going right amongst the big game, and Is going to make those rabbits think the day of Judgment has arrived. Give mo a club." Tho leader handed pa an ax handle, and when we looked ahead towards tho corral where tho rabbits had been driven, It seemed ns though thcro wero a million of them, and they wers Jumping over each other so It looked as though there was a snow basdr of rabbits four feet thick. When pa ald ho 'waV ready a fellow sounded a Bugle, and pa'a pony started ort on the Jump for the corral, and all tho other horses started, and everybody yelled, but they held back their horses so pa could have tho whole field to himself. Gee, but I was sorry for pa. Ills Ax Handle. horse rushed right Into . the corral among3t tho rabbit:), and when It got right whero tho rabbits wero tho thick cat, the darn horao began to buck, nnd tossed pa In the air just as though ho had been thrown up In a blanket, and he camo down on n soft bed of strug gling and scared rabbits, and tho other horsemen stopped at tho edge of tho corral and watched pa, and I got off ray horse and climbed up on a post of the corral and tried to pick out pa. Then nil tho hundred or more dog3 wero let loose In amongst pa and tho rabbits, and it was u sight worth go ing miles to tee If It had been some body else than pa that was holding tho center of tho stago, and all tho crowd laughing at pa, and yelling to him to stand his ground. Well, pa swung his ax handlo and killed an occasional rabbit, but thero wero thousands all around, and pa seemed to be wading up to his mlddlo In rabbits, and they would jump all over him, and bunt him with their heads, and scratch him with their toe nails, and the dogs would grab rabbits and shako them, and pa would fall down and rabbits would run over him till you couldn't seo pa at all. Then ho would raise up again and siaul the animals with his club, and his clothos were so covered with rabbit hair that he looked like a big rabbit himself. Ho lost bis hat and looked as though he was getting exhausted, and then he stopped and spit on his hands and yelled to the rest of tho men, who bad dismounted and were lined up at the edge of tho corral, and said: "You condemned loafers, why don't you come In hero nnd help us dogs kill off these vermin, cause I don't want to have all tho fun. Come on In, the rou ter Is fine," and pa laughed as though he was In swimming and wanted the rest of, the gang to come In. Hsjnsfl&r Tho crowd thought they had glTen tho distinguished stranger his limine. nnd so they nil rushed In with clubs nnd began to hill rabbits and drive them nway rrom pa. In nn hour or bo tho most of them wero killed, and pa was so tired ho went nnd sat down on tho ground to rest, nnd I got down off my perch nnd went to pa and asked him whnt he thought of this latest ex perience, nnd I began to pick rabbit hairs off pa's clothes. "I'll tell you what It Is, Hennery," said pa, as ho breathed hard, ns though ho had been running a foot race, "this rabbit drlvo reminds mo of tho way tho rich corporations look upon tho poor people, Just as we look upun tho jackrabblts. Wo pity n single Jack rabbit, and he runs when ho sees us, and seems to say; 'Please, mister, let me alone, nnd let mo nibble around and eat tho stuff you do not want, nnd wo drlvo them Into n bunch, tho way the rich nnd mean Iron-handed trusts drlvo the people, and then we turn In and club them with the nx handle of graft and greed, and wo keep our pow er over them, If enough aro killed off so wo are In tho majority, but tho Jackrabblts that escape the drlvo keep on breeding, llko tho poor peoplo that the trusts try to exterminate. Sonio day tho Jackrabblt nnd tho poor peoplo will get nerve enough to fight back, nnd then tho Jackrabblt and tho poor peoplo will outnumber tho men who fight them and kill them, nnd they will turn on tho cowboys with the clubs, and tho trusts with tho big head, nnd drlvo those who now pur.suy them Into corrals pn the prairies and Into peni tentiaries In tho states, and those who aro pig-headed and cruel will get theirs, see?" I told pa I thought I could see, though thero wore rabbit hnlrs In my eyes, and then I got pa to get up nnd mount his horse, and wo rode back to town with tho gang, while tho 5,000 rabbit carcasses wero haulbd to town In wagons and loaded on the cars. "Where do you send'thoso Jackrab blts?" asked pa of. the leader of tho slayers, as he watered them loading tho rabbits. "To the Chicago packing housos," said tho man. "Thoy make the finest canned chicken you ever ct." "Tho devil, you say," said pa. "Then wo have been working nil day to make packing houses rich. Wouldn't that skin you?" Then wo went, to tho hotel and I put courtplnstcr on pa where the rabbits had scratched the skin off, and pa ar ranged to go out next day to tho ranch where tho herd of buffaloes live, to look for bigger game for, tho show, though ho would like to have n rabbit drive In tho circus ring next year If he could train tho rabbits. GERMANIZATION OF EUROPE Trend of the Various Nations I Toward the Most Power ful Empire. Tho North German race Is possessed of a mania; it In In tho grasp of one ab sorbing Idea. "Dcutschland uebor Alles" says tho motto. In these days that means tho commercial supremacy and dominance ot Germany around tho world, says tho Cosmopolitan. Kor Instance, all Europe knows that tho death of Emperor Franz .Joseph will bo tho signal for tho breaking tfp of Austria, tin last remnant of old Uomc, tho eastern empiro of tho t'wo son3 of Constantino. Even now the fabric Is looso; nothing holds to gether the irreconcilnblo Magyars, Czechs, Slavs, and tho rest but tho popular affection for the emperor nnd popular commiseration for his mis fortunes. Ho has no direct successor; the heir-apparent is not liked, and upon the advent ot the new ruler trou ble Is scheduled. Tho Hungarians havo fixed their hearts upon Independence, and will have nothing else. With tho removal of that keystone the arch falls, Inevitably, and from tho fragments the North Gormana expect to gather at onco Bohemia, Austria proper, and the Tyrol. And why? These countries must go somowhero; they cannot drift on alone. The trond of progress Is wholly against pmall nations, wholly accre tive, and solidifying. Except Bohemia, tho oountrles here Involved are nat urally German; therefore their inev itable place Is in tho-Gorman empire. Moreover, close about the borders of Germany aro other states essen tially German In population and thought, Holland, for Instance. Tho law of evolution Is tho development of what Is necessary for tho survival of the stronger organism. Holland has magnificent seaports adjacent to the Atlantic, and Germany needs them; Holland Is almost German now; In time, then, manifest destiny, will draw it into the confederation. North Germans see plainly tho fu ture of Switzerland as a provinco In the coming German empire. Some per sons, knowing well tho temper of the Swl3 people, bellovo that first it will be necessary to depopulate tho coun try; but the German answer to this is tho natural force of development which Is drawing tho nations together 33 surely as it is Indicating tho dom inance of the most resolute ana hardy. And what will the rest of Europe be doing while thus the new German empire Is being formed? There are the balance of power, and the Eu ropean concert, nnd all the rest of it; the Dreibund and the Zwelbund, nnd tho entente cordlale, and what of all thes?? According to the German Idea of things the rest of Europe will have no inoro to say about the forming of the new than It has had to say about tho loaning of the present German empire. If Austria shall conclude to Join th Great German confederation, that will be nobody's business. If Hol land determines to follow tho exam ple of Bavaria, of what concern will that be to the rest of the world? No body Interfered when Bavaria came in. If Denmark bo induced to give up u precarious and costly independence foi a place In the German procession, who shall deny her the right? Fwaer ot later, according to the Imperialistic idea, the roller Is to go over all the smaller nations; thoy aro dc.Mel to obliteration, anyway, llko small tradesmen before the department i ore, or small manufacturers before Jinst.
