This inquiry was also submitted to a special list of broom corn growers in certain counties wherein broom corn is grown to any extent. These inquiries were returnable July 25, 1000, and included six ques tions, proper, relating to tlio acreage planted in 1009 as compared with 1008, the growing condition of broom corn on July 25, the percentage of the acrenge planted on sod ground, the per cent marketable condition, the porcent shed cured, and the average price per ton received for the 1008 crop. Tho grow ing conditidn is shown to be 74.0lper cent on the same date last 3 ear. a. differ ence in favor of last year'a crop at this time of 7.5 por cent. Tlio per cent ol the acreage planted on sod ground is 19.0 per cent, or 23,008 acres. This shows then, that 81.0 per cent of .tlia total acreage was planted on old ground, or an equivalent of 100,013 acres.. The. marketable condition of tho 1908 crop is shown to be 08.4 per cent of the Mate, while thai of the 1007 crop was but 60.6 per cent. The percentage of last year's crop thot was shed cured Is 15.8, while that portion of the 1007 crop tjiat was shed cured was 11.3 por cent, thus show ing an increase in the Xractice of Bhcd curing tho brush Tho increase In tne porcentago of shed cured broom corn is evidently compensated for by tho in crease in the average market value. Tho reports from our several correspond ents' indicate the average value received for tho 1908 crop to be $51,67, which when compared with tho average value received for tho 1907 crop of $18.74, shows an increase of $2.83 par ton for last year's crop. The estimated total value of the 1008 crop is ploccd at $1,050,102. The prevailing weather conditions in many sections of the broom corn dis trict are not at this time all that would bo desir.ed. Farmers were lato in get ting their broom corn planted on account of the wet weather, and the scarcity of rainfall during tho past mouth, is beginning to make an impression upon the growing condition of tho present crop. But fow reportB indicate that broom corn is fired, to any appreciable extent. Jigger Bug Causes Talk Juat howjthochiggeror jigger came to fid Tntroduccd into the rUnited States from its original habitat in West Iddia and South America, Oklahoma City druggists, who oiler for sulo sure cures for the little pests, do not at tempt to explain. As one druggist ex- presst-d it, "The chiggers are hero and j its our duty to alleviate tho sullorings of the people." Ho made no attempt to explain the presence of the almost invisible mites. "You have a cure, then?" this drug gist was asked. "Sure," he replied, producing a small bottle wrapped with a bulletin, an nouncing its morita over thos-i of other remedies. Much information, concerning 'chig gers and jiggers, harvest mites and other species of the Leptus Irritans of Riley, belonging 16 the large family ot Trombidiidae, was given in the bullo tiu. The sufferer also learns, after reading farther down in' this bulletin, that the chtgger is red in, color aud shows an especial fondness for burrow ing into tho flesh of man and beast, Still another .paragraph informs him that lie. secured his supply by brushing through the. leaves pf various plants, from gruss and especially blackberry aud raspberry bushes. The chiggcr Is invariably in six-logged form. It is nearly circulaYn out line, tho legs extending well beyond the margins of the body, aud of a bright red color of minute size. "An amateur photographer aecldent ly discovered n sure cure for chiggers," another druggist explained, when asked what remedies liejjsold and rec ommended for their bites. "He had been developing some camera plates in his bath room and uccidoutly drop ped a quantity of hpo-sulphite of soda in the bath tub. Later ho tilled the bath tub with water without having removed his Mixing' solution and bath ed, Ho had been suffering frpm chig gor bites aud noticed that they diu not affect him after his bath. Latei experiments with stronger solutions of tho hypo-sulphate of soda convinced him that ho had discovered a sure cure." "But," inturroptod the chigger' victim "what was there in this uhnto graph solution that killed the potts?" Hypo-sulphite of soda is an alklli, he explained, "aud tho chigger bite is an acid bite. Tho amateur merely dis covered an old, well known chemical aw that an alkali neutralizes an acid It is upon this principle that all chig ger cures are compouuaeu. , ! Other druggists said that many per sons called for amouia, saline, water, aud arnica. And a butcher said thai lie had sold bacon rinds for the oii'me purpose. Many sufferers from the bites of chiggers aud inosquetdes buhe iu a strong solution of common salt water. At those drug stores where a cure is not offered for sale the clerks usually recommend the photographer's fixing solution.? It shouldbe applied after the following directions: Dissolve the' hypo-sulphite of soda in water, .making nearly a saturated solution, and moisten or hatha the spots affected' where the chiggors have burrowed. Usually one application is stitlicieut. No harmful or d'sacrceable effects can attend the liberal ubo of a strong solution 01 tins Bait, except a slight smarting of the skin that has been made sore from scratching. To g t full benofitB the silt should be allowtd to dry on the skin, and one application mudo in the morning will suffice to re pel the chiggers for an entire day, even though tho person explore blackberry patches or lie in grass where they are known to be in largo quantities Okla homa City Times.
