i a E I 1 Florida v i mcKEisr Farm PAm or moor lALAfip rdo ariZr ?.. rn OH tho last four years I have earned my pin money out of chickens. My hens glvo mo n nrnflr nf mnrn thnn flvn (lnl- lnn n lmn .1 Vl lllt flint O tl IlliD 11 UCIIUl AUU W.ltllV W.I.I. " enormous yield for chickens? So do I, for I had been rnlslng a few chick ens ever since 1 was a small girl; but I have my account book nnd so I know Just what I spend and what I tako in. My chickens nre Hhodo Island Reds and bred from tho best layers. I have found that thero Is more In tho strain than In tho breed of chickens. I enr rled my chickens with mo when I went to Florida, so I know nil about them for generations. Years ngo I sold all my other breeds, keeping only tho Plymouth Rocks nnd Rhodo Island Reds, because I had proved to my satisfaction that theso two breeds gave most eggs in tho winter when eggs aro scarce and fetch tho highest prices. I finally discard ed tho Plymouth Rocks becnuso I found tho Rhodo Islanders hnrdlcr and lighter feeders, or perhaps I should say bettor foragers. This characteristic of their being good foragers has had a good deal to flo with my largo profits In Florida. I never havo given my flock meat. They Qnd Insects enough for their own meat supply. Sinco the first season down thero I havo never given them a bit of meat except tho few morsels that aro mixed in tho tabic scraps which they havo regularly every day. In Florida I havo not raised my own feed but hnvo bought it In small quan tities nt tho regular retail prices. I havo been forced to hlro all labor done, such as building and repairing tho houses, coops and fences. At my homo In Massachusetts, being then a comparatively strong woman, I was Bblo to do all 8ti ch things myself, nnd pot my chickens never netted mo moro than $1.50 n head all tho years that I itruggled with them. Thero In the winter tho birds had to bo housed and supplied with green and meat food besides their regular rations of grain. In Florida thoy run In the yard3 nil tho year long nnd get their green food from tho small pntch of grain which I keop for them at tho back of their yard and their own meat by catching Insects. Northern friends who havo come to visit mo nsk if thero !s not a differ ence In tho prices which I now re ceive for my chickens and those I sold whllo in Massachusetts. I am forcod to reply that I formerly re ceived somewhat higher prices than aro paid in Florida. Most of my eggs nnd dressed fowls are bought by tho largest hotol and though It is run by a northern manager, ha expects and gets southern prices. All that tho hotel does not tako is rendily sold to prlvato families, so I nover havo tho expense of shipping. I do not think any other breed would do as well as my Rhodo Island Reds. I lot my liens sit on their own eggs. I havo found this best In a small flock. A hen must havo soma tlmo for rest from laying, I nover allow a hen to sit more than onco In each year, becauso It is not neces sary where all aro equally good moth ers and where Uiero is a good demand for fresh eggs. Dcforo the chickens aro a month old tho mother Invariably has bogun to lay again. I havo four hens that glvo mo 200 eggs each year. Thoy uro mother nnd throo daughters. As tho mother is now four years old I am looking forwnrd to the tlmo wheu her yield of eggs will dropoff, but oven then I think It will pay mo to keop her, not only becauso of tho strain, but also becauso sho is an excellent brooder nnd mother. Tho ordinary hen I do not think It pays to keep after it is two ears old. I havo found that In Florida tho houses havo to be muoh moro care fully nttended to thnn in Massachu setts becauso of the extromo dltllculty in keeping down vermin. My houses nro all of wood built for ventilation moro than warmth. For tho first four feet tho bonrdu nro put on solid to prevont tho depredations of what the negroes down horo call varmints, that Is, minks, 'coons, foxes and stray dogs and cnts that irray slip through your fence. Abovo this solid lino a space of two Inches is allowed be tween the boards until on a lino with tho roosts. Thero again Is a solid belt to provent tho chickens from roosting In n draft. Besides the usual enemies horo a chicken raiser has to fight siiakos. They slip Into tho nests nnd not only swallow tho eggs, but often devour young chicks. To fight them a Flor ida friend told mo to get a pig and give her th run of tho yard, but to h earned my pin money out of -WtJfSojjy -SScSKl k chickens. My heiiB glvo mo Wj SftjaFKSpBR KM, iisr mako suro she bad no Berkshire blood in her veins. It seems that In Florida, If nowhere oIbo, tho Berkshire hog has , a reputation of eating flesh and being especially fond or young poultry. I I succeeded In getting a pig of no particular breed, nnd since then havo had no trouble with snakes; Indeed It Is seldom thnt ono Is seen in tho plnce. That pig and her succession of families havo driven away nil that they haven't eaten up. Oh, yes, tho snnkes fight for their lives, striking tho pigs repeatedly, but this doesn't nppcar to Interrupt tho feast. They aro calmly caught and chewed up. Thoy say tho snake diet doesn't in jure tho quality of tho pork or af fect tho tasto in tho slightest, but I much prefer to sell my pigs to serv ing them on my own tablo. Weed my poultry only onco a day; I mean tho grown fowls. The chicks are fed just as I did In Massachusetts. This one meal is given at night and they havo all they will eat up. In tho fall months when tho grass seeds nro ripe tho fowls eat very lightly. At tho beginning of my venture hero I did glvo a morning feed, but I soon found that tho chickens preferred to go to tho grain patch nnd tho orange grovo when thoy first Jumped down from their roosts. If I wero stronger nnd able to do all the work myself I am suro I could easily make eight dollars a head. I havo heard of several Instances down hero in which such a profit Is made regularly and without a great amount of work. MARY FINNY URMSTON. Senator Boles Penroso, at a dinner nt tho Philadelphia club, said of a movement that ho opposed: "It promises Incredlhlo things. In fact, It makes mo think of Jack Travcrs of Pike county. For twenty-five years I suffered agony from a terrible humor, completely cov ering my head, neck and shoulders, so even to my wife, I becamo an object of dread. At large expense I consult ed tho most able doctors far and near. Their trcatmont was of no avail, nor was that of the Hospital, during six months' efforts. I suffered on and concluded there was no help for me this side of tho gravo. Then I heard of some one who had been cured by Cutlcura Remedies and thought that a trial could do no barm. A great many aro going up this season who expect to pay two or threo dollars an aero moro thnn thoy wcro asked to pay last year. Western Canada Is no longer nn experiment. Tho fnct that ono hundred and fifty million bushels of wheat wcro raised thero last year as against ninety-flvo mil lions tho year previous, shows that the tiller of tho soil In Central Canada Is making money and it is safo to say that bo is making moro money than can bo mado anywhero olso on tho Continent In tho growing of grains. Ho gets good prices, ho has a sura and a heavy crop, ho enjoys splendid rail way privileges, and ho has also tho advantages of schools and churches and such other social llfo as may bo found anywhere.
