JUNE II All farmers and throshorroen of Beaver county who are inter ested in adopting a standard wage for harvest hands and a standard price for threshing are requested to meet at the court house in Beaver, Saturday, June 11, at 2 o'clock, prompt. There -seems to be somewhat of a mis understanding as to the purpose of the meetings that have recent ly been held by the T hreshermen andTractors Association, of Bea vor county. It has been thought by some that these meetings were held for the purpose of setting the price of threshing to bo charged by the men who own machlnos, but the matter of p'rlce was not mentioned at either of the two aieetings. Threshermen that I have talked to say that the price will be largely determined by the price paid for harvest hands as the price for pitchers Is usually the same as harvest hands, hence the higher the har vest price, the higher the price for threshing and for that rea son the meeting that will be held on the above date is for the pur pose of arriving at a definate un derstanding and not each farmer and threshorman be in competi tion with one another, as is usu ally the caso. I nave been asked by Claude E. Connally, Federal director of the employment service, to aot as representative of that depart ment during harvest and below is an extract from a letter just received from him. "The result of a survey just completed of the principal wheat growing counties in the state in dicates that the prevailing wage for single hands (pitchers and shockers) this season will be from $2.50 to $3.00 per day. In some localities it will be under $2.50 and in some as high as $3.50." Owing to the high cost of rail road transportation the above wage will not attract labor from other states, nor from distant points within this state, there fore, you can readily see the im portance of farmers co-operating and working together in each community as much as practi cable in order to take care of the wheat with as littlo expense and as little outside labor as possible. If those ndedtup harvest hands will send in their wants as soon as they know what they will be, I will do my best to supply you and if outside labor is needed the sooner we get in our order the more likely it will'be tilled. FERTILE EGGS COSTS THE FARMER $15,000,000 A YEAR Eggs are the most Important poultry product marketed and the sale of them amounts to mil lions of dollars annually in Okla homa. Tho revenues received from this product by the farmer and poultryman could be sub stantially increased by proper handling and marketing. Tho most important sugges tion that can be given is to pro duce infertile eggs. An infertile egg is laid by a hen that has not been allowed to run with a male bird. In most cases 14 days is sufficient time for eggs to be come infertile after the male bird has been removed from the flock The male bird in the Hock has no influence on tho number of eggs laid by the hens. He mere ly fertilizes the germ of the ogg which is not necessary when the egg is to be marketed or used for table purposes. It is impos sible foV a germ to develop or a blood ring to form in an infertile egg. It keeps in better condi tion, therefore, at temperatures that would cause fertile eggs to become unfit for food. During the recent drop in price of eggs those affected the least in the large markets were the strictly fresh, clean and uni form in color. If all producers of eggs In Ok lahoma will observe the following rules, better prices will prevail. 1. Keep tho nests clean: provide one nest for every four hens. 2. Gather the eggs twice daily. 3. Keep tho eggs in a cool, dry room or cellar. 4. Market tho eggs at least twice a week. 5. Sell, kill or confine all male birds as soon as tho hatching season is over. Remember that summer heat has the same effect on fertile eggs as the hen or incubator. For further information see your county agent. CHAS. M. SMITH, Extension Poultryman, A. & M.
