If 7 J Fy- \r '-V \?'} a ' r }'/ ' . ' *. f ft STOLEN STATE LINE MARK. <n The Lake Michigan end of the state line between Indiana and Illinois has been lost or stolen, and the police of two states are hunting for it. The mark for years has been a stone at une nuncirou ana iMgntn street and Indianapolis avenue. On one side was cut the word "Indiana" and 011 the other "Illinois." The stone was four feet -long and two feet high, one and a half feet projecting above the ground. Not ^ only has it been removed, but tho holo from which it was taken luis boen filled, bo no one can tell exact- yc ly where it stood. The police be- p, lieve some householder, more thrifty than honest, has imbedded the stone in the foundation of a residence or y( wscd it as n base for a lawn flower gc pot. fii The next boundary stone is fivo miles inland, and a survey will have to be made from that point before 1 the place for a new Lake Michigan JL mark can be established.?Chicago Tribune. U AfnViM M U/NIM'I (o In a recently published book on central Africa H. L. Dulf says: "Tho principal means of conveyance all over the Nyasaland and the Shire districts is the machilla, or hammock, a simple contrivance of canvas and bamboo carried on tho shoulders of natives. An average machilla team for a fairly long journey may .consist of from fifteen v to twenty men, and if these are up to their work and have good roads before them they will travel at a very creditable rate indeed and will cover thirty or forty miles without difficulty between dawn and dusk. '>' As a rule the machilla is carried by I'l umv iwo moil Jit ii unie, one ut eacn cncf of tho polo, tjlio remainder trot- )]n ting behind and relieving the car- |1( riers at intervals of ten minutes or bo. The whole team as it speed* keops up a constant chorus, varying P from mere individual yells to actual gt iongs of regular beat and rhythm." 8trango Pets on Warships. The privilege of keeping pets is very much appreciated by bluejack eta, who lavish their spare time and cash on some very strange animals. The Centurion once had a monkey that used to eat with a spoon from a plate, and drink from a glass, with V a dinner napkin tucked under hia ^ chin the while.
