? The Abbeville Messenger Entered at the postoffice as 2nd-class matter WEDNESDAY, JULY 1, 1885. SUBSCRIPTION 0 Piedmont Institute. Near the foot of the moiintain in fill! of view "Hald Knob," "Table Ilock,' ''Lovers Leap" and other notable points, is Pickens Court House, and in Pickens is the "Piedmont Institute." This must excellent institution of learning is presided ovor by Prof. \V. M. McCaslan, n native of Abbeville. His assistants nro Mrs. McCaslan who assists in the primary department. Miss Klissa Aiken who has charge oT the music department, and Miss Ida Hoi lings worth who controls the art department. Thero arc in attendance from one hundred ami r.Ci.. : 1 i? liIty [nijiu.s uuiu cv iwuuty years old. It was our pleasure to attend the examinations and (he Commencement ot this institute lust week. And we have come away greatly impressed with tho great work in the cause of education being done there. The examinations gave evidence of a proficiency in every branch taught, that could only be attained by assiduous attention on the part of the pupils and by thorough and carcful training and devotion to their work on the part of the teachers. The prizes were won by tho follow ing pupils, i lie ineuai lur mo Most original essay, by Miss Marie McCaslan. The committee were unable to decide between Miss Ola llolliugsworth and Miss Eliza McCaslan, for the medal, for best general scholarship ? so they awarded ft medal to each of them Miss Mortensc Maulden was awarded that for recitation, and Mr. Claude Alexander won that for declamation. To L. C. Cinig, was given the prize for the highest number of perfect marks during the session, and to Miss Ida Mauhlin the best speller. The Commencement Exercises consisted of music, vocal and instrumental, of recitations, of declamation, of original speeches, and a debate by the students oil of which were of unusual merit and interest. On Thursday, the l!ev. \V. 1). Kirklnn-1 delivered the anniversary address. Those who know Mr. Kirkland will readily accept the statement Hint ms auuress was eloquent, practical and strong. We li.ivo seldom listened to a more timely nnd appropriate speech. It deserved the cnthusintic applause that it won. Upon the same day the medals were delivered by Mr. M. L. Bon ham, .!r. The work done in the music and art departments, deserves more than passing notice. In the first, everj-thing went to show the ability of the tc.icher and the industry and the talents of her scholars. The art department has only been in operation for three months. Yet the walls of Ilia hall were covered with beautiful drawings, all the work of the pupils. Beldom have we enjoyed a visit more than that to Pickens. We were much impressed with the unanimity of interest in the institute, shown by the people of Pickens and the surrounding country. Professor McCaslan and his coadjutors are doing a noble work which is appreciated by them for whom they labor. To Professor McCaslan and his interesting family and to Mr. and Mrs. Thornly we are indebted for many ~r i i i.*- 1 r\ <IUL? VII UUNpilUlliy UIIU MIUII1L,.S8. UUT visit to them will remain forever a pleasant memory. Old Books null Papers. An esteemed correspondent from Reynosa, Laurens County, S. C. has sent us a copy of "The Krskine Collegiate Recorder," published at Erskine in Febuarv, 185ri. The editors were R. E. Cochran, M. M. Duffle, W. L. lludgins, J. A. Johns, J. C. Maxwell and J. fl. Peoples. The Recorder bears the motto of the College "Soienlia cum MoribusConjuncta.', And was issued under the patronage of the senior class. It contains an article entitled "Duo West, Past and Presint" in which mention is made that Hon S. McGowan was the last anniversary orator. Doubtless' this old copy of the Recorder would be very interesting to the students and friends of Erskine. The same friend semis us a copy of me Aiaoama Male Intelligencer pnhlished at Tuskaloosa, Monday, May 8 1837. This old paper is full of interesting matters, which we will reproduce hereafter. ^ Among other things, is a poem on Gen'l. Jackson in Cincinnati. Meeting of the Bible Society.
