Coroner Hardin was advised yei
tcrday of the sudden death at Wi
lianiston of a white man by the nam
ot ilonea. formerly a resident of th
Cluck Mill village. Ilonea went t
Williamston some days ago in searc
ot employment. He engaged " roon
at a boarding house conducted by.
Mr. Worlhey. A few days ago he b<
came ill and Dr. Lander was snmmoi
ed .to attend him.Wednesday afternoc
Dr. Lander visited the patient, at
when hp returned to the house yeste
day morning ho was told that Hon?
had died durin?; the night. Coroner
Hardin requested Dr. Lander to make
a careful examination of the man's
body and report back'to him. Later
in tiu* day the physician reported that
he had examined the body and found
that Mic man came to his death from
natural causes. A botlfe ol laudanum
waa found in tho room, but there wafs
co evidence to show that the man had
taken any of the poison. Parties liv
ing in the house stated that some-time
during the night they heard a noise
In H?nea's room, but did not go in to
investigate. It is surmised that the
noise waa caused by the dying strug
gles of the man. When advised of the
circumstances of death, Coroner Har
din deemed an inquest unnecessary.
Yesterday morning the proprietor of
tb? boarding house" wLero Honea died
came to Anderson and looked up the
dead man's wife at the Gluck Mill and,

On charges of carrying concealed]
weapons and shooting on the public
highway, Jerome Sloan, of colored ex
traction, waa tried yesterday before
Magistrate W. C. Broadwell and con
victed. Not having $20 to pay his

was arrested early yesterday morn
ing by .Deputies Olin Sanders, W. B.
Drennan and James Williams, who
had repaired to a negro bouse In the
vicinity of the county home for thc
purpose of keeping tab on the pro
gress of a colored "hot supper." While
the officers were watching and the
merrymaking was in full swing in
the house three big negroes came
scampering through the woods, where
the officers were concealed, carrying
betw een them a large pot full of hot
-;
peas. It developed that tho peas were
the "refreshments" which were tb be
served after the ball was over. The
?heft of thc refreshments was not dis
covered until some time after thc
three negroes with the pot had disap
peared tn the distance and devoured
the peas, immediately pandemonium
broke ioxmc in th? dance hali and a
small army of negroes rushed out
across the fields in search of the
thieves. Far up the road they heard
the three negroes beating a tattoo
upon the pot. using their spoons for
drumsticks. This was a signal to tho
pursuing gang that the pot had been
eaten clean. About that Mme Jerome
Sloan Whipped out a pistol and tired
In'the direction of tho negroes who
had swiped the pot of peas. No soon
er had he fired this salute than Dep
uty sheriff Sanders reached out of the
bushes and collared him.
