THE COUNTY FAIR
By Peter Radford
Lecturer National Farimers' Union
The farmer gets imore ')ut of the
fair than anyone else. The falir to a
city mnan is an entertainment; to a
farmer it is education. Let us take a
stroll through the fair grounds and
linger- a moment at a fe' t of the points
of greatest interest. We ill first
visit the mechanical depari ent and
hold communion with th world's
greatest thinkers.
You are now atten~iing a congress of
the mental gianits in mechanical sci
ence of all ages. T1hey are addressing
you in tongues of u-on and steel andl
in language mlute .and( powerful tell an
eloquent story of the w'orld's pr-ogress.
Thle inventive geniuses are the most
valuable fatrm handls we have and
they perform an cenuring service to
mankind. We can all help others for
a brief per'iod while we live, but it
takes a master mind to tower into the
realm of science and light a torch of -
progress that will illuminate the path
way of civ'lization for future genera
tions. "rho meni who gave us the
sickle, the binder, the cotton gin and
hundreds of other valuable inventions
vwork in every' field on earth and will
continmue their- labors as long as time.
Their bright intellects have conquered
death and they w~ill live and serve
mankind on and on forever, without
muont'y and without price. TIhey have
shown us how grandl and noble it Is
to work for others; they have also
taught us lessons in economy and effi
ciencey, how to make one hour do the
wiork of two or more; have length.
ened our lives, multiplied our
Oppiortunities and taken toil off the
back of humanity.
They are the most practical men
the world ever produced. Their in
ventions hav-e stood the acid test of
utility and efficiency. Like all useful
men,) they do not seek publicity, yet
millions of machines sing their praises
from ev-ery har-vest field on eath and
as many plows turn the soil in mute
applause of their marvelous achieve
ments.
FARMER RADFORD ON
WOMAN SUFFRAGE
T[he home is the greatest cent ribu
tion of women to tho wvorld, and the
hearthstone is her throne. Our so
cial str-ucture is built around her, and
social r'ighteousness is in her charge.
11er beautiful life lights thie skies of
hope and her refinement is the charm
of twentieth century civilization. Her
grafces and her power are the cumu
lative products of gener-ations of
queenly conquest, and her crown of
exalted wonmanhood is jeweled with
the wisdom of saintly mothers. She
has been a great factor in the glory
of our country, and her noble achieve
ments should not be marred or her
hallowedcc influence blighted by the
coarser dluties of citizenship. Ameri
can chivalry should never permit her
to bear the burdens of defon~iing and
maintaining governmenit, but should
preserve her unsullied from the allied
.nfluences of politics, and Drotect her
from the weighty responsibilities of
the so-did affairs of life that will
crush her ideals and lower her stand
ards. The motherbo'od of the farm
is our inspiration, sihe is the guardian
of our donmestic welfare and v guide
to a higher life, but directing the at
fairs of government Is not within wo.
man's sphere, and political gossip
would cause her to neglect the home,
forget to mend our clothes and burn
the biscuit.

When I gave notice to the

down it was told and circulatedi
in a part of the county that I
was going to leave Pickens soon.
When I came to Pickens to lo

say I have a practice of which I.
am proud. I apiprciate all the
patronage I have received and
will continue my practice here
so lon as I receive the work. I.
am the only entist. that has
kept an office openi inl Pickenis

of five years. If my work was
inferior or practice did not jus-1
tify me I would have gone'be
fore this (late. I am having
waterworks put in my oftice,
and would niot go to this ex-.
pense if I wvas going to leave. I
am here to stay, and wheun in
need of dental w~ork I will, as
