TuE REPUBLICAN9 are felicitating
theiselveR that resumption in 1879 is
ed fact, and that it will effectually
sileice all opposition before 1880.
But'if resumption li January should
be succeeded by greater stringency
than ever during the summer and
tall of 1879, it does not take a prophot
ee that there will be such a tidal
P -of opposition to the party of
neatty eumption that Radicals and re
'ORF CAInptionists will be buried out of
ht. Upon the success of the finan.
I policy of the Republican party
S epend in a large measure the
Idntial election of 1880.
)BEAST BUTLER's remark that the
epublicans are in a majority In only
b'lliree States of the Union, in the face
of their recent boasting, though as
tounding, is about true. In New York
at the last election there were about
876,000Republicans,850,000Democrats
and 75,000 Greenbackers; in Pennsyl
vania 809,000 Republicans, 870,000
Democrats and 90,000 Greenbackers;
,. jn Ohio about 272,000 Republicans,
..,000 Democrats, and 40,000 Green
Th6hkers; in Michigan 125,000 Repub
boar , 70,000 Democrats and 6;,000
their Is. In New Jersey and Con
behin t the Radicals are in a minority
lican. \9 eraltusand each. An analysis
f' oHt'asomildistricts shows that,
for,. but fgr the Greenback craze which
- distracted the oppositjon, the Radicals
would have elected barely a corporal's
guard. The New York Times thinks
the situation very doubtful, with a
fioating vote of three quarters of a
-Inillion. Democratic division in 1860
as the cause of all our woes. Let
not 1880 witness a repetition of blun
ders.
Northern Ignorance of Southern

Hadical support. The assertion that
Wade Hampton has stooped low to
secure election as Senator is out
rageous, and If Nordhoff is the just
nma he 18 represented to be he has
been grossly deceived.
It is needless to say that such mis
representation cannot but make sick
at heart those people of the South who
desire friendly relations with the
North. We cannot sit quietly and be
foully slandored as we were just after
the war when tihe North had nothing
but abuse for us. It can never he
forgotten that the South saved the
Union from civil war In 1876, and
thus manifested its sincerity. Such
slan'deis as are now being daily dis
seninated through the Northern press
are well calculated to destroy all this
friendship. As long as the South sent
delegations to Washington composed
solidly of thieves and Radicals, the
North was satisfied. That she begins
to be solidly decent is the offence for
which unscrupulout Radicals are
libeling her, and even beguiling de
cent people Into following their ex
