The twentieth of May is to.the oiti
zen of Charlotte and Mecklenburg
Dounty what the Mardi Gras is to Nevp
Orleans. Independence Square in that
oity has been justly styled the cradle
In which young liberty was first rocked
in America. The oitizens of Charlotte
had made grand preparations for prop
srly observing the one huidred and
twenty-fifth anniversary of that im
portant event, and at an early hour on
p'riday crowds of people began to fill
the streets' of the oity, althQugh the
light shower. of rain prevented many
tom attending who would have other
wise been present.
The Important event of the occa
dIon was the grand inter-State fire
men's tournament and band contest.
Among the visiting firemen were the
Pioneers of Anderson, the Indepen
dent Hook and Ladder Company .ol
Anderson, and the Phwnix Hook and
laddor Company of Columbia. The
Young America Cornet Band of An
doreon was the only representative
flom the Palmetto State in the nusical
contest.
At noon the procession was formed,
and after marching through the prin
oipal streets of the city, were drawn
up in Independence Square, where an
address of welcome was delivered by
Mr. F. B. McDowell, the mayor of
the city.
The steamer contests were the only
ones which took place on Friday. The
Hornet firemen of Charlotte carried ofl
the first honor of the day-a cash
prize of $100. The Acme Company
Df Monroe, N. C., were successful in
oarrying off the second prize of $50 in
oash.
This closed the contest among the
fHrenen, and the crowd then pro
oeeded to the Base Ball Park to wit
ness the contest with the willow and
ball between the Charlotte and Colum
bia Base Ball Clubs. The former had
oonsiderably rattled the Columbias on
the evening previous, and of course
were the favorites. After a very
pretty game the Charlottes were again
declared victorious by a score of 11 to
3, much to the chagrin of the Colum
bias and their friends.
Tne event of the evening was the
plume drill of the Hornet Nest Rifle
men, under command of Capt. T. Ross
Robertson, formerly of our town. At
the hour appointed this celebrated
Company fell into line at their armory
and marched to the Academy of Music
to participate in the annual plume
drill. After some musical perform.
ances by noted musicians from various
portions of the' State, . the drill was
commenced, and 'aflter a sharp contest
the plune was awarded, to Sergt.
Mack Davis. The contest narrowed
down to Sergt. Davis and Sergt.
Irwin, Sergt. Davis winning by short

Saturday morning was bright and
clear, and the crowd which thronged
the streets of the old historic city wasn
even greater than on the day previous.
The first event of the morning wasn
the ' band contest. There were only
three entries-the Charlotte, the Meek.
lenburg, composed of young men of
the county, and the Anderson band,
composed of small boys, but who have
gained considerable reputation in our
State as musicians. Each contestant
was required to play three piecesn
alternately. After the first round ii
was eidentthat the Palmetto boyn
were the favorites and would likely
win. It was a rare musical treat, and
at is conclusion the judges awarded
the cash rize of $50 to the Young
America Cornet Band of -Anderson,
This announcement was greeted with
loud cheering while a dozen strong
men literally picked up the stand and
carried it through the streets while the
little fellows rendered another piece.
In the afternoon the reel and-the
Hook and Ladder contest took place.
The first prize in the former wasn
awarded to the Pioneers of Charlotte,
who also carried off the honor in the
grab race. In the Hook and Ladder
contest the Phoenix of Columbia wan
the favorite, and won after the mag
nificent record of making the run o1
one linndred yards, erecting the ladder,
taking it down and restrapping it in
85 seconds. The Independents o1

This concluded the contest,' and the
crowd again assembled at the b'ase
ball park to witness the last game be
tweon the Columbias and the Char
lottes. On the first inning the Colum
bias were "shut out," white Charlotte
chalked up one run. The Columblas,
however,.were on their metal ahd ral
lied, and in the second inning ohalked
up five runs to her credit. 'Then came
a succession of "sht- outs" fip to the
sixth inning, when the Colambias
chalked up two more runs, Wlile the
Charlottes added six to their scare. Al
the conclusion of the ninth inning
the score stood 8 to 7 in favor of, the
Columblast who did not play their lasi
inning. Ihe game was conceded the
