THLE NEWS AND HERAL] PUP.LISHED TRI- WEEKLY --BY .iBWS AND HERALE COMPAN TERMS. IN ADVANCE: Oae Year, - - 83.C Six 11onths. "- - WINNSBORO, S. C. Tuesday, November 1. - 1891 WHY THE PASSENGER DEPOT SHOULI NOT BE MOVED. "I shall frame this petition as The most unique thing of the kind I have ever seen during my experience as a railway manager. It is th, first time I have ever known a community to petition against the erection of a hand some passeDger depot at their place." This, Mr. Editor, is reported to have been remarked by Ma Welles, superin tendent of the Southeru Railway, when he received the petition against the new depot in Winnsboro. The writer sympathises with Mr. Welles in his surprise, for Mr. Welle3 does not know what a conservative old com. munity we are, and how ave!se we are to any c' -nge in the line of prog. rems. Had Mr. Welles known as 'xtter, as we should like him to do, he would not have been surprised at the peti tion. There are home folks here who have -worn themselves out trying to saddle new ideas of progreas-new railroads and consequently new depots, and o1lier things on this staid old com munity with the result only of being called cranks. Mr. Welles did not know, perhaps, that that rer. petition was signed by a majority of our lead- c ing business men, representatives of e the conservatism of this old town It was natural that Mr. Welles should not understand the petition. He does not know us. He does .not know that we G like to see the old pain less red bricks - L that we like to sit in the fireless, deso late old "Waiting room for ladies"; C that we like to climb over half a dozen drammer's trunks to get to the fi "window next the wall" to Duy our tickets; that we, "leading business i men," like to have the depot where it i3 so we can meet all the trains and if a train is late, can loaf and gossip adtil it comes. Yes, Mr. Welles, poor man, did not know when we put our ladies on the train we liked to drag them through a crowd of loafing negroes and '"leading business men" -wc not t) mention half a dozen hotel porters; and running the guantlet of sat drummer's trunks being pitched out on the narrow way bet ween the fence grc and the train. No, Mr. Welles having 2 never passed through this excitement inc cannrot understand how and why we of: like it. There are other surroundings, 3 which cannot be mentioned here, of fion which we are sure.Mr-Wmage - cia] rant else he would understand w y -- the "leading business men" are op- '"A posed to a change-. 3 Through yeur columns, Mr. Editor, 100 the writer wishes to inform Mr. Welles Si that even if he does remove the pas- jew senger station he cannot touch the disc postoffice. To move this requires the 39 Censent of .a large majority of the 40 "leading business men" of the corn- 41 munity andi we are sure this cannot be cand obtained. Should the postoffice and 42 station be separated Mr. Welles .will 43. have to set up a crane and catcher so Man that the mail pouches may be taken on stars -and off as the train passes avoiding 44 any delay in the distribution of the rock mail by having to br ing it up from 45. the new depot. simn: We would also ca:] Mr. Welles' at- 46. tention to the number of ladies' names 47. on the new depot petition. We dq quois not recognize the right of ladies to All 11 express a preference in this matter. 48. They tiay hope to escape the unicom- bomb fortable waiting room and the drag- 48. ging process ot getting them off and ship on the train, but we, the "leading Brook business men", propose to resist this Maine effort to break up our going to meet 50. the train regardless of their wishes or duced convenience. 100 i _______Quo Vadi5. 51. bat tle BUCK LICK ITL ;:-.
