Hut?? for Advertising.?Ordinary Ad vertisements, per square, one Inser tion, $1.00; each subsequent Insertion, 60 cents. Liberal reduotion made for large Ad* rertUenients. W.W.BALL, Proprietor. LAURENS, 8. O., May 19. 1890. On to-morrow at noon what is gen erally recognized as the Demooratic party of this State assembles in con vention. We say ^recognized" because it is the only machine by that name? eo nonine. There is no other organ ization olalming tho functions of tho Democracy. Other two or three or ganizations in tho State for the last six years, as sorts of Imperium in im perlo, havo endorsed platforms and set forth principles, and used tho ma . ohlnery of the socalled Democracy, to give them sanction and coloring. But, for tho sako of the argument, for the present, we will assume that the Demo cratic party will be called to ordor in Columbia on to-morrow. It is assum ing a monstrosity, we are aware, a sort of double headed, double stomached affair, for even Charleston has a dele gation, half fish and half lion?as thoy used, to say in our boy days at a log school house?half horse, half man and half alligator. Lot it be then tho Democratic party, whether the fish or the animal predominate. In the days of tho first Harrison the campaign refrain wont: '?Fire in the mountains, run boys run, The Mexican chicken and tho mer maid's come." Wo are content; wo take it for what it calls itself?the Democratic party. This party, as a national party has boon a olty of refuge for the South in all her many tribulations. It is tho only rofuge this day?tho only hope of the future, for this weaker, tho helpless section. It is treason and fool hardiness to dosert it therefore. There can bo but two na tional parties; these are founded on the constitution?tho Republican, tho Demooratic. Whether in triumph and power, or in opposition as a min ority the Democratic party is all that is left for the South. The party may be weak?it may be strangled, it may be unsound?it may be undemo cratic It behooves us to purify it?to stand it up?to fortify it?never to de sert it. If then tho party which as sembles to-morrow under tho standard of the Carolina democracy cannot swear to abide its fortunes at Chicago ?let them turn it ovor to other and willing hands. No two loaves in a great forest are all-round mates, no two minds precisely agree; upon mat ters of expediency there will be differ ences?but upon tho great cardinal principles and doctrines we are as one. Whatevor is done, let it be done at Columbia; let us not make a spect acle of ourselves at Chicago. Wo say therefore emphatically, lot the test be made, curly and soon; that those assembled as Democrats at Co lumbia bo put to tho doliverance? whether or not they will abide tho ac tion of the Chicago convention. If not, then let them exercise the privilege awarded all men of seeking thoir own comradeship. Let birds of a feather flock together. # * # Secretary Carlisle has been invited by ono of the groat Exchanges of Char leston to deliver an address in that city upon tho financial issues, it is an open question, If this is good policy. Our people have probably passed tho point I of education?the campaign of educa tion is over. The conclusion has pro bably been reached. If a voter has reached the point that this is so?he will fight it out to make it so. If he has concluded that silver or copper with the "superscription" of Uncle Samuel will make them so much money, thon words of burning elo quence will be wasted. Carlisle's smooth periods will be futile. Gov ernor Evans has just visited Charles ton; the metropolitan police live upon '"change," the Charleston Hotel dis pensary dispenses delightful ices and elegant mixtures to State officials; the thousands of paid and fatted hirelings of the Stato government are concert ing to hold their Innings. Carlisle's long ride from Washington and long period's will bo utterly wasted. A new triok after tho manner of tho salo of the State Bonds will be a better deal. Let Gov. Evans, Tlllman and Rhind detail their experience and it may count for something. Stato Treasurer Bates may be included at the confes ? sional. "YVhy go so far from home?? We ourselves are "up to do limit" and need no teaching and lecturing upon financial deals from abroad. Wo aro practical financiers, are we Away with your "bookish theorio." *#* Samples of the "ohomioally puro" were sent to Mr. L. J. Williams of tho State Hoard of Control and seized by ordor, of Gov. Evans, Then ensues a spicy correspondence between theso ?"great gentlemen. This is all a matter of course. The Augean stablos of our masters will need cleaning as long as the great Dispensary Livery Estab lishment is kept running. * a * Dr. Hawthorne and Dr. Stricter go to Nashville and Richmond. And now Mr. Samuel M. Inman, it Is annouced, has outgrown Atlanta and goes to New York. It is but fair to state that Gov. Morton has just approved tho "Great er New York" bill and that olty has grown to be three millions by the ad dition of Brooklyn and other towns.? Other Atlantians may now be expected to go to New York. YOU CAN BELIEVE The testimonials published in behalf of Hood's Sarsaparille.? They aro writton by honest people, who have actually found in their experience that Hood's Sarsa parille purifies the blood, creates an appetite, strengthens the sys tem and absoluU(ly and perma The New 'Haven Register, Demo cratic, claims that TUlman hi a posthu mous child of the French Revolution ary period and In his birth lost his reckoning. He may be the beginning of history repeating Itself. ?% Tho tinuH are hot down In Cuba.? But thoy are not to monopolize the fun. Skirmishing will be a little lively on the banks of the Congareo at 6 this evening. #* ? The Charleston News and Courier urges a pea nut grinding factory in ??tho oity by the sea." The Legislature will not meet in Columbia until tho second Tuesday in January, 1897. Fountain Inn Correspondence. Correspondence of The Dally News. The Ladles Aid Society of the Baptist church has arranged to have an entertainment on the eve ning of the 2l9t iustant, and ample provision will be made for a large crowd. Refreshments will be fur nished and the occasion will be enlivened by recitations, dialogues, songs, etc, etc. That church ha* determined to build a pow house and to that end a committee to provide the means lias been constituted. The Rev. J.B. Parrott will lec ture on Tuesday night next, ou tho Southern Baptist Convention and its work. W. P. Coker's little daughter had the misfortune to dislocate and fracture her elbow yesterday. Dr. J. R. The Secretary of State yesterday granted a charter to the Clinton Cotton Mills Company, of Clinton. The directors are M. 8. Bailey, who is.also President: W. J. Head this statement: 44 When my son was 7 years of age, he had rhoumatlo fever and acuto rheuma tism, which Bottled in his Ictt hip. He was so sick that no ono thought there was any help (or him. Five sores broke out on his thigh, which tho doctor said wero Scrofula sores. Wo had three different doctors. Pieces of bone camo out of the sores. Tho last doctor said tho leg would have to bo cut open and tho bono scraped, before he could get well. Howard became so low that ho would eat nothing, and ono doc tor said thero was no clianco for him. 44 Ono day, a newspaper recommending Hood's Snrsnparilla wan loft at our door.
