McLaurlu at Spartanburg.
It is the proper tiling to glvo a cer
tain gentleman, who shall be nameless,
"his due." The Senator made a gen
uinely appropriate Ith of July oration
at Spartan burg. It reads like old
tunes?before the inauguration of tho
speaker's "commercial" era. The
speech is euphemistic, optimistic, oulo
gistic of what we (tho American peo
ple, all of us) are doing, have done,
are bound to do, and are going to do
and make of our glorious opportuni
ties and mission as fixed by destiny.
We are to expand, to widen our com
merce, feed and clothe mankind, en
rich them, operate as a nation in chrl.
tiani/.ing the heathen and fatten our
solvcs while realizing the roseate
dream. Nothing could be more appro
priate for a 4th of July audience, and
Spartanburg was at her best in select
ing an orator for tho occasion. The
speech tits like a French woman's
glove.

Named.
John B. Cleveland, of Spartanburg,
has boon named for Governor. lie is
as level-headed a gentleman as tho

to err, to get off on the wrong foot and
tangled in head and legs, something
happens, and John Cleveland Intro

Really there is little room for edito
rial effusion this week, as we give
up so much space for our Treasurer re
port and fiscal year matters. Of course
there must be some satisfaction In read
ing of money and seeing how It goes
and relleoting that it really exists even
though it evades and skips and slips by
us and through our fingers, as the fa
bled limpid waters the lips of the
thirsty Tantalus. It will be remembered
that he was kept forever up to his chin
in a pool of water but not allowed to
taste a drop. One account alleges that
he was punished for stealing u dog,
another that he stole the nectar and
ambrosia from the table of the Gods
antl gave them to mortals. It is proba
ble the thermometer was about '.'7 when
the Judge imposed sentence. All of
us hope however, to escape so long
punishment?the grass Is still up to our
chins, but by a hard lug wc will be rid
of it and then come the gentle showers
and then the snowy blooms in August
and then the silvery tlecco in October,
and then the golden harvest in Decem
ber at least) and then now bon
nets.
