We have just finished taking stock and balancing our books for 1905, and we want to thank
our friends and the public generally for their very liberal patronage and for helping us to make
the past year the Biggest of our mercantile Life. In doing this you have helped yourselves as
well as ourselves. Because by your liberal support it enables us to do a much larger business
and to buy in larger quantities, thereby saving money in buying and of course selling cheaper
than we could do if we did not get these advantages.
Bear in mind that Merit in the quality we sell is onr biggest asset. Good advertising does
not make good clothes, good dress goods or good anything. But the name of Davis, Roper & Co.
stands for all that is good in the quality we sell, as we are back of every assertion we make and
stand ready to make good all our claims. Then our long experience in buying enables us to
detect the shoddy from the good. So remember that anybody can make speils in advertising in
the papers, but not every one sells goods that you get your money's worth.?This we guarantee
to do.

THE ENGLISH PARLIAMENT.
Why Itn IlonHrn Were Unlit Upon the
111 vor Bank.
Wellington once declared that the
most exciting moment of his life Avas
not in any of his great battles, but that
In which ho bad to forbid William IV.
to attend a public banquet in the city
during a time of great national excite
ment. Of the millions of people who
every year see tho English houses of
parliament, how many imagine that
their position was determined by Stra
tegie considerations? No one nowadays
can think of the palace of Westmin
ster In any other position than that
which it occupies. Hut when the old
houses were burned down and the task
of rebuilding faced there was a propo
sition to establish them on or near the
site of St. James' palace. Wellington
resolutely put down his foot on the
proposal.
The slto suggested, Its advocates
pointed out, would bo better ns regards
centrallty and convenience than any
other. But to the argument of the
duke there could then be no answer.
"With a vast and growing population,
such as yours in Ix>ndon," he said,
"you must never make It possible that
you can be surrounded. You must
build your houses of parliament upon
the river, so that tho means of ingress
and egress are safe and that tho popu
lace cannot exact their demands by
sitting down around you." Sir William
Prasor, In whose memoirs tho story Is
recalled, mentioned it to Napoleon III.
Just beforo the death of tho latter.
"What wisdom!" ho said. "What wis
dom!" And it sot him musing upon tho
different turn which tho history of
France might have taken if in other
ways as great precautions had been
observed in his own case.?St. James'
Gazette.
