W. L. WOOD. 3 by w. d. s. ; * * **** ********** * %**.**! Capt. W. L. Wood wa3 a self-made man. He started out in this world with nothing but good health and pluck, with a determination to make some thing of himself?and he succeeded ad mirably. When he died he was one of the largest landowners in Sullivan township and ranked as one of our best farmers, which he learned in the school of experience. He was overseer in Laurens, New berry and Greenville counties and learned much of the ways of our col ored brother; so, when he settled down on his own farm, he knew exactly how to manage the negro. He could get more work out of him, and with greater ease, than could most of the old slave owners. He was very fond of military life, and raised a company in the 14th South Carolina regiment for Confederate ser vice. When the regiment went to Vir ginia he was too old to stand active service in that cold climate, and had to come he. .e. His wife took charge of the plantation during his absence, and she raised fine crops. She also col lected his debts and placed the money in cotton. When Captain Billy re turned from the war she had over one hundred bales of cotton stored up for him. The sales of this cotton was put in lands, which sold very cheap at that time, which was the basis of a fine for tune for his family. What a blessing a good woman is to a man! And often she is not duly appreciated. He was as tough as whitleather. One day ho came over to the store and Dr. Barney Smith said to him: ?* "Captain, let me cut that wen ofi* your forehead." "All right, sir," replied Capt. Wood. They went around to Dr. Smith's of fice and were gone so long that I went to see what they were doing. I found Smith with a knife cutting out the wen, and he had the captain as bloody as a stuck hog. No one being present to as sist, I had no idea that he would let the doctor perform the operation. After the job was over and bis head bound up he mounted his horse and rode home. On another occasion he went up to Fork Shoals factory and had the "In dian doctor" cut a tumor off the back of his neck. That evening he rode back home. He would hoe corn in his bot toms until he got wet with perspira tion, then go into Beaver Dam creek with his clothes on and roll over and over until he got cooled off, then pick up his hoe and go to work again. Very few men have the endurance of Capt. Wm. L. Wood. $100 Reward, $100. TILLHAN TALKS TO STATE LAWMAKERS Addressed the General Assembly on the Subject "Immigration and Its Rcla. lion to the Race Question." Columbia, January 23. Senator Till man addressed the General Assembly tonight on "Immigration and its Rela tion to the Race Question." His speech was listened to with marked attention by the large audience present, and was highly commended by the large majority. The members of the Senate und House were very nearly all present, and in addition the lobbies and galler ies were well tilled, many ladies being : present. Lieutenant-Governor McLeod | presided and introduced the speaker. ! Senator Tillman reviewed the events of reconstruction, and told how the! yoke had been thrown off by the white people. He declared that the present franchise laws are merely temporary in view of the fact that the negroes are becoming educated and able to comply I with the suffrage qualifications. At \ the same time they are increasing in , numbers more rapidly than the whites. | There were two remedies he suggested. First, we must have an increase in' white population. He pointed out how I the State had been populated by foreign peoples at different stages of its his- i tory, and declared that we must seek through wise means more white set tlers, people of kindred ideas, who will become owners and renters of land, not laborers. He" said that we need not expect to compete with other more fa- j vored sections on equal terms. In order to make this State more at tractive be advocated the ainage of coast lands by the national govern ment, on the same plan the irrigation work is being carried on in the West. His scco/ul remedy is the repeal of the Fifteenth amendment. He told how his speeches on this question had been received 'in the North and West, and declared that he believed the people of those sections will listen to the demand of the South that the amendment be repealed. His argument on this linn was well reasoned and logical, and nowhere in his address was there any bitterness or vituperation. At times the senator rose to heights of eloquence, and es pecially when he declared his love for South Carolina, the State which had showered honors upon him. The fact that there is now being started a determined fight to stop the work done the last few years to induce immigration to South Carolina by abol ishing the immigration bureau lends particular appropriateness to the sena tor's address. He did not refer to this matter at all, and may not have been informed on the situation, but there is certainly no reason to doubt where ho stands on the immigration issue. The Pure Hood Law. Secretary Wilson says, "One of the objects (Tf the law is to inform the con sumer of the prosence of certain harm ful drugs in medicines." The law re? quires that the amount of chloroform, opium, morphine, and other habit form ing drugs be stated on the label of each bottle. The manufacturers of Cham berlain's Cough Remedy have always claimed that their remedy did not con tain any of these drugs, and the truth of this claim is now fully proven, as no mention of them is made on the label. This remedy is not only one of the safest, but one of the best in use for coughs and colds. Its value has been proven beyond question during the many years it has been in general use.
