the practice of placing loose coins in
boxes by rural patrons has grown, ami
the delay in the delivery and collection
of mail and the hardship imposed on
rural carriers incident thereto, you
are informed that, commencing Febru
ary 15, proximo, rural letter carriers
will not be required to collect loose
coins from rural boxes.

piece of paper or deposit them in a
coin-holding receptacle, so they can be
easily and quickly taken from boxes;
and carriers will be required to lift
such coins and. where? accompanied
by mail dispatch, attach the requisite
stamps.
This should be promptly announced
to the rural patrons through whatever
means you may employ, without ex
pense to the department, and you are
at liberty to give the Information em

CENSUS EXAMINATION HELD.
Seventy Six Applicants for Enumera- I
tors' Positions in 1,aureus.

ed by Mr. Jas. Y. Wallace of the Lau- 1
rens postofflce force, on Saturday con
ducted the census enumerators' exam
ination of "test." according to instruc
tions from the proper department. The |
examination was held In the court
house, and there were 7t> applicants
?.vi whites and 22 negroes. Among
the white applicants were two ladies.
Miss Ludie A. Taylor of Princeton,
Sullivan township, and Miss Culbcrt
son, daughter of Mr. Dave Culbertson
of the Upper section of Waterloo town
ship. This list also included several
citizens p;:st middle age, but the ma
jority of them were young men.
The colored applicants Included one
negress. several preachers, teachers
and clerks.
The examination commenced shortly
after 10 o'clock and was held in in
stallments, two classes of whites be
ing first examined and concluding with
the colored class in the afternoon and
evening.
The county Is divided into 2.1 enum
eration districts, and for each district
one enumerator will be appointed, up
on his or her certification by the Hon.
Ceo. M. PrltChard, census supervisor
for this, the 4th district of South Caro
lina. These appointments are expect
ed to be made in March. On April the
15th the work of taking the 12th cen
sus: will begin and will be completed
in :'.0 days.
