Reasons Given by Governor Rlease

The Advertiser has secured a copy
of the records in the case of lohn G.
Wham, whose sentence of $l,f>00 or
two years at bard labor was
reduced by Governor Hlease to
a line of $500 or the same
number of years at hard labor. From
tho records it appears that quite n
formidable array of names was se
cured. The following utv tho niuo)18
set forth by the governor:
Wham, John G. (White).
Convicted of Assault and Battery of
High and Aggravated Nature, at the
Spring, 1912, term of court for Lau
rens County, and sentenced to two
years on chain gang of said county,
or In the State penitentiary, or pay a
line of $1,500.
Petition was presented by Col. John
M. Cannon, of Laurens.
The petitions presented, state that,
"Whereas, the said sentence and fine
imposed by the court Is excessive and
unreasonable, etc." Petition present
ed from Fountain Inn, signed by more
than one hundred of the best citizens
of that community; also a petition,
setting forth tho same facts, signed
by more than three hundred of the
best citizens of the town of Clinton,
where the said offense was committed;
also petition from Gray Court, signed
by about seventy-five of the best citi
zens of that**community; also petition,
setting forth the same facts, signed by
the sheriff, deputy sheriff, county po
licemen; clerk of court, deputy clerk
of court, city police, magistrate, mem
bers house of representatives, probate
judge, county auditor, county treasur
er, by the leading members of the
Laurens bar, by prominent physicians,
residents of the town of Laurens,
county superintendent of education,
the foreman of the jury who tried the
case, and by a large number of other
prominent citizen of the town of Lau
Inasmuch as the said petition stater,
that the said sentence and fine im
posed by the court is excessive and
unreasonable, and being signed by all
of tho county officials, and by such an
unusually large number of the promi
nent citizens of the town of Clinton,
where the offense was committed, and
the city of LiV'rens where the facts
and circumstances aro well known, the
sentence Is hereby reduced to a fine of
Five Hundred Dollars, or two years
imprisonment on the county chain
gang, or in the State penitentiary.

Lisbon. April 8.?Mr. William Posley,
son of Mr. B. H. Pasley of Cold Point,
has returned home after an absence of
twenty-six years. He has been away
so long that his aged father failed to
recognize him. Mr. Pasley was born
and raised near Mountville and went
west when a boy. He has worked
a while in most all of the western
states, and for the past twenty years
he has made his home In Los Angeles,
Cal. He is a brother of Hon. R. B.
Pasley, of the Spartanburg bar and
Mr. John Pasley, of Williston, Fla. His
only sister, Mrs. Mose Madden, died at
her home at Cold Point several years
ago. From some cause nothing had
been heard of him in several years,
and it was generally believed until
recently he was dead. Mr. Pasley is
now spending a few days with his
to his Carolina home. Mr. Pasley and
his many friends welcome him back
to his Carolina home. Mr. Poseley and
bis niece, Miss Ethel Madden will visit
his brother Mr. John Pasley of Willis
ton, Fla., in a few days.
Hon. B. H. Pasley, of Cold Point
spent a few days with relatives last
Hon. A. .1. Smith, we are glad to
state, can walk about in the house.
Before many days Mr. Smith will be
so be can attend to his extensive farm
Mrs. .1. T. A. Ballew will attend the
music festival in Columbia Thursday.
Miss Sallie Holmes is teaching a pri
vate school in the old home at this

parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Duzhardt
near Ware Shoals.
Mr. J. R. Duzhardt. of Athens, Ga.,
visited relatives at Gray Court and
Laurens last week.
Mr. Frank W. Huzhardt. traveling
salesman for a large wholesalo con
cern of New York, will visit his par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Duzhardt,
near Ware Shoals, before leaving for
the northern states, where he will take
up his work during the summer months

Trinity-Ridge. April 8.?On last
Friday night, the preliminary oratori
cal contest was held at Trinity-Ridge'
high school. Mikes Parks was chos
en to represent the school at Laurens.
A Sunday School Institute, was held
at Trinity church the fifth Sunday.
Mr. J. M. Way, state Sunday school
secretary, was the principal speaker.
Quite a number of churches were rep
resented. Among the visitors were:
Mr. C. B. Owings and wife, Messrs. R.
R. Owings. H. Y. Simmons, Johnson,
H. Terry, Chas. Wolf, and John Holt.
