MEMORAIL DAY
OBSERVED SUNDAY
Itev. .1. It. T. MaJor I)elliers Eulogy
ol tie Cotifederate Soldier.
Alemorial Day exercises were held
at the Lau rens cemetery Stnday af
ternooti ii the presence of a large
assemblage of people. The exercises
were presided over by A. C. Todd, Esi.:
being opened with pnrayer by Itev. M.
L. Lawson. Patriotic airs were sung
after which .\r. Todd introduced the
speaker of tile day, Rev. J. It. T. .\a
jor. Mr. Major made an eloquent ad
dress eulogizing the soldiers and wo
men of the Confederacy and defetiding
the soithern soldier from the charge
that he was a rebel and traitor. Ir.
Major said that the war was a result
of differences between two schools of
thought, the one sc hoo! inl the iortih
holding that the central guverinueIt
should be supreiie inl matters at con
flict between the several states, and
the other selool in the south holding
to the opposite view in that the state
was a sovereigi power ani at liberty
to withdraw frot the union ( should it
so desire. It was the exercise and de
fense of this right which they lield
theirs that the southern soldiers went
to war, he said, alt iot inl any enideav
or to overthrow an established and
recognized form of governnient. No
better index to the spirit of the Con
federate soldier, he said, could be
pointed to thai that of their conduct
after the war whent they leanic to
admit that the principle they fought
for had been lost and it was their new
ditty to become loyal citizens under
the united country.
Following the address of Mr. Major,
Mr. Todd real the names of Laurens
soldiers who had passed away since
the last Memorial Day. They were
S. E. Itay, W. It. Set zler, W. 11. Franks
and .loiti W. Ferguson.
After the exercises proper were
coiplete(l, tle clildren of the gradedi
school dlecorated the graves of tle de
parted soldiers. Tie children did not
forget the graves of tho few northern
soldiers resting near tlie graves of
their old antagotnists, wreaths of How
ers being placed tupont thietln also.
The14 bened(4ictionl was pronlouniedl by
Rev. \l. L. Lawson.
