The Man Factor.
It Is said that a Yankee can make
his livin-g on Plymouth Rock, and the
marvelous history, indeed, of all New
England is the history of a rock-ribbed
country. 1Every man can live off the
crumbs that fall from the table, or,
on the other hand, he can sit in at the
table himself. A man can be a man
from his neck (own at two dollars a
day, or from his neck up-which may
mean just its 'much as he cares to make
it. In other iwords, It Is the ian fac
tor in life that counts.
Failure and1I Success.
No man knows just what failure is
for every man of genius can turn any
failure into success. The most fruit

ful times, of all times, for researc
and discovery are those times of thi
deepest gloom and those days of th(
most stress'and strain. The histor3
of humanity has 'been one of a con
tinual looking back and thanking God
for 'the rough and dark ways, which
in turn, forced us Into super-work and
ingenuity and which finally lead uq
into the better way.
The world is continually crying out
for a formula, 'but there Is no foilmula
for success. -Life Is too big and too
Infinite to be circumscribed and con
tained by a formula. Success does
not stand in the market place and 'point
out to every ian a sure way. All of
life is a matter of personal election and
personal selection. It Is only the blind
and the dumb man that does not elect
and select for himself.
A Work of Design.
You and I have been placed In all ab
solitely marvelous world. It Is a world
plainly of design. The man ;who canl
not see earti as a design of a Creator
is a born fool. 1 (10 not know how
mlally hun11(dreds of millions of years
it took to make coal, and oil, and phos
I)hate beds, and minerals, and clays
and all man ner of building materials,
but true It is that they are all here.
E-ach one of these creations carries
adaption in hundreds of reactions
about whiich we are just beginning to
learn. Each reaction iII these matters
show still more the wisdom of the
Creator, and true it is that any man is
I real service to society as ie relates
himself to these things.
'T'hie Soil.
lHit ever tleyond coal and oil and
minera's does the soil itself show
marked evidences of creative design.
The soil is basic. The soil, indeed, is
related to everythiing oil this earth. It

is foreign to nothing. There are soils
that have tbeen in use -for ive thous
and years and are still unexhausted.
The possibilities of an acre of land
are infinite, The .plants that can grow
out of It are inilnite. There Is no
other iprofessioli that creates within
the heart of man such -a passion to go
Into it as does this profesion of ag
riculture, and it is all because of the
essential richness, the adapttbility, and
the 'possibilities #that lie within it. If
we fall in it it is not the soil's fault.
There may be temporary factors amak
ing for retardation and trouble, -but in
the end the soil in the hands of genius,
1s 'going to win out!
'1o my mind the possibilities of the
soil carry more romance than does
'any other industry. Pardon. me for
making a personal application and il
lustration. It was myself who first
listed iulghum Oats, Iron and 3rab
ham Cow :Peas, Abruzzi Rye, I lundred
Day Velvet. Beans, Bush Velvet Beans,
Milozi Soy Deans. Brown Top Alillet,
and Carpet Grass. This inductory
work is to me a ipassion. These things
have beeni worth im illions of dollars to
agriculture. Next year I have a flne
list of these indluctory things. It costs
more to exiploit these thliigs than is the
profit that comes out of then, but the
romance of a profession does not lie
in dollars and cents. If we (10 not get
romance out of life it is our fault. The
good thing in agriculture Is that. the
romance way is a scientific way, and
.se.lence is basic. The trouble with so
many of us is that we will not read
and also that we will not follow
science. Take the close spacing of
cotton, for instance, six or eight inches
in the row, and, in fact, a -plan that
largely eliminates this costly thing of
chopping out cotton. It has been
demonstrated a thousand times and a
world of publicity has been given to it
as one of the best means for weevil
control and the earlier production in
the season of the -boll on the cott'on
plant, and yet I am doubtful If a half
a dozen men In this county today are
following this scientific rule.
A ill ptl blelless.
.The wise Creator has made agricul
tu re the most adavlable of all profes
sions. Ivei the most ignorant man
who works only from his neck (own
can make a living in it if he cares to.
On the other hand, agricuilture can be
made just as complex and also just as
beautiful as the man cares to make
it. It suits itself to all classes of men

and the worker in it can make it just
,as much of a romance or $ust as mnuch
of 'a drudgery as he pleases, all of
which takes us lback to this matter of
the man factor. It ds a principle that
we cannot 'get out of a thing Just what
we 'vut into it. 'Try as we may we get
out of a thing Just what 'goes into it.
* In Memory of Alvin D. PLwers *
Corporal Alvin IL Powers, - son of
J. T. and -Mary D. 'Powers, was -killed
in action While seriving with the
American Expeditionary Forces in
France. His body arrived home Thurs
day, April 21 and was interred in War
rior 'Creek cemetery on Friday. A
large crowd of sorrowing friends and
relatives -saw.hin tenderly laid to rest
and paid their tribute of resvpect to
their soldier friend and schoolmate
He heard .humanity's clear call,
And knew the voice divine;
lie gave his life, he gave his all,
In deadly battle line..
The silent stars look down
'Where lies this loyal son;
In frost and deny they weave a crown,
Of honor he has wqn.
