Washington, Nov. 5.--By a vote of
38 to 28 the senate rejected tonih
the Reed amendment to the tax bil
proposing to enact the soldier bonu
hil and retain the excess profits a:
a meansi of financing adjusted com
pensation for former service men.

ported the amendment, and two Dem

Harding was assailed in the senate to
night by Senator Stanley, Democrat
Kentucky, for what he described a

chusetts, Democrats, intnded to offer
their propakiion to pay the bonus out
of the interest on the foreign debt.
After the bonus issue is disposed of,
leaders on both sides expect rapid
progress to be made on the tax re
viion bill with possible passage of the
measure Monday night. Debate on
the hill today was enlivened by an
attack on Secretary Mellon by Sena
tor La Fallette, Republican, Wiscon
I sin, and a defense of the treasury
chief by Senator Watson, Republican,
"We have heard here from day to
- lay," said Senator La Follette, "that
t wealth defies the government, that it
will not pay its taxes, but tale offi

- it down as a proposition-and I am
going to bring it before the country
s that we can not make wealth pay and
- that we might as well accept that

s tablish a system of taxation that will

Senator Watson took sharp issue
r with Senator La Follette's intelnreta
g tion of Mr. Mellon's testimony before

Senator La Follette was arguing for
his amnedment proposing that tax re
turns be made open to bublic inspec
tion, which was rejected, 35 to 33. 1
The Wisconsin Senator reserved the
right to resubmit the amendment
when the bill is reported out of the
committee o fthe whole.
The senate olsa rejected, 39 to 28,
another amendment to Mr. La Follette
providing for taxes on estates rang
ing from 1 per cent on the first $50,- t
000 to 50 per cent on estates over
$30,000,000. Another amendment by
the same senator was accepted. It
requires taxpayers in making returns
to list tax-exempt securities held by

the senate Monday it would not reach
the house until Wednesday as that
body adjourned today until that time.
Leaders there plan to take it up
