"We," says the Combinalion, "With our eite little tricks, We killed our Candidate." Who buried hiin so deep, "I," says Moses, the meek, "With my farmer's spade, I put hi forty feet deep." Who tolled the bell? "I," says the c;harlestoin Chief. "With steady pull and solrtlut. I tolled the bell.'' Who preached the funeral? "I," says Riebland's Pope, "With joyful acclamation, I preached the funeral." Carolina Sparlaln. The Beautiful Snow. Published by request.] In the early part of the American war, one dark Saturday morning in the dead of winter, there died at the Commercial hotel, Cincinnati, a young woman over whose head two and twenty summers only had passed. She had once been possessed of an enviable share of beauty.; had been, as she herself sail, "flattered and sought for the charms of her face," but alas ! upon her fair brow had been written that terrible word "pros titute." Once the pride of respecta. ble parentage, her first wrong step was no small beginning of the "same old story over again." which has been the only life history of thou. sands. She might have shone in the best of society. But the evil hour that proved her ruin was but the door from childhood; and having spent a young life in disgrace and s'uame, the poor friendless one died the death of a broken-hearted out cast. Among the personal effects was found, in manuscript, the "Beau. tiful Snow," which was immediately carried to Enos. B. Ree<d, a gentle. man of' culture aind literary taste, who was at that time editor of the National Union. In the columns of that p)aper, on the mnorning following the girl's deafth, the p)oem appearedl in laiint for the first time, When the paper containing the poem came out iln the morning the body of the vic timn had not yet received burial. The attention of Thomas Buchan an Read, one of the first American poets, was soon1 directed to the newly published lines, who was so taken with their stirring pathos, that he imtnedliately followed the corpse to its final rest ing place. Sueth are the plain facts concern ing her whose "Beautiful Snow" will long be regarded as One of the high est gems in Amnerican literature.
