A$ TO LINUMINO.
Last week a meting of colored pwo
pie was held in Columbia to protest
against lynching and an address was
prepared anld itsited to the leop'o of a ho
State and the nation. We Iblish this
address in auother column.
The lilorald and News Is Iaw-ahldbig

for everybody to reLm111berl that the

Mob violence is dangerous and we do

Let the colored I)eople and the white

know that we will defend, and avenge
the outrage upon, the virtue of our
women and children, and even then we
are )owerless to give the punishiment

look uo)ou such criminals as ilnearnate

Lot the colored preachers begin at

with them and willing to help them.

VA.LACE A. CLINK 'ARK.
Some weeks ago The Iferald and
News8 stated that Mr. 1B. H1. (1line
would offer to the town eightvoeen acres
of land just this silde of Ifelena to be
used as a lark. That it was iii orig.
inal forest. We Irged that it he ae
1-epted if the conditilons were such that
the town) could aea It and that it he-'
known a tie Wallace A. t'lile 'ark.
Mi. Cline as had the ilatter. brout It
to the aiention of the council and
0ouncil passed a riesolutionl referrin11g
the matter to Mayor If. If. l'vans to
confer with Nr. Cin% and ascertai
'onid itionts.
No better pllace for a ipark i'an he

A L. an exp)ense (of $800 ori $1 .IMA it
could be mtade a mnost at tra"tive and
charinig place. A good plai'e- to have
ipienies and other' amlSusmnts.
Let uts have the park if we can ge.t it.
There is no0 c'her place in or' near' town
that will ec ual the C'line~ pr'opty for
a par'k.
Now that the woodien hnihtiini areLlt

it, would be a goodl idea to see if somte-I
thing could not be dune to secur'e this
lot upon01 which to erect a new court
house. It wotuld be well to moviie the C
court hous out of the public square I
and th is 10 woruld be both c01"ovenient
to the jail and to tihe town. The mat
ter was talked of last, year. Tihie coiuty
already has a fund tor' enlarging the
court house, and in consequence of the
talk of moving and buildinig a new
court, house nothIng has b)een done.
The town would subhscribe a snug sum
to have the courit house out of the pulb
lie square. It is worth lookinag int.o.
The State contained a dispatch from
Wash ington On least Monday in whiiichi it a
was stated that lt. E'. W!!liams, color
ed, had been slated by "BWss" Webster
for the p)ostmastership at Newbenr'y.
WVe have read a letter from Mr. -
Webster, dated O)rangebmurg, Aug. 2
to0 a gent, leman of this city saying that
he (Webst.er) had not comimitte~d himx
self to any onec, and would not)1 commnit
hhintielf to any one until about timie for a
the appoinlttment to be mradeo. Mr.
Davidson's commission does nIot exp ire'
until Febr'uary 1898, and we believe the
white people can prevent the appoint- hi
ment of a colored p)ostmaster if they
will take steps and protest, against it,.j
GJoy. Ellerbe hao instituted an Inves
tigation into the outrageouts r'aids at
Spart, anbutrg a few days ago and he
says if the repor't published in the
Herald is correct the conastab)les will beo
at Once decapitated. He wants t.he d I.

There will be a conventlona In Green- t~

ChIef Geo. A. Langford has r'ec3Ieied
an invitatIon to att.end, and will very h

property and lives of the people. Theyh
