IAIRIIID IN WAR1 TIME.
A Guimpse of the City. the Crowd and the
Palace.
Three o'clock in the afternoon. As
the evening approaches, the streets
of Madrid grow more and more ani
mated, filled with a crowd gay and
vivacious.
Before the palace, in the avenues,
officers and soldiers ride about in
uniforms of charming elegance;
white hussars; blue hussars; red
hussars. At the old historic palace
the white hussars are on guard. On
the staircases, in U4o courts, paco up
and down the halberdiors, striking
with their weapons the carpet or the
sounding stone, when son 0 prince or
dignitary passos before thom. And
see, down there, traversing the inner
galleries and announced by the ro
spectful salute of the halbordiers, a
very noble woman, wit i a beautiful
face and white hair, with the bearing
of a queen--Her Imperial Highness,
the Archduchess Isabel, mother of
Her Majesty, the Queen Regent.
The facade of the palace gives on
a sort of circular garden, bordered
with antique statues, which seem to
be drawn up thus about the trees, to
dance some stately old-time dance.
On the opposite side. the royal
windows overlook the country--a
country which astonishes because
there, so near the city, it has alr-ady
the aspect of a desert.; no hoasos,
appearantly no ro'tds; woods, under
brush, i vast half-savago extent.
which ends at tho far otl monotains,
and through which winds the mnrl
ancholy Mancanar-es.
Such a view, seen between cur
tains of brocade, the colors of which
age has deliciously subdued, gives to
the sumptuous solitary apartnents
something more of melancholy and

the fnntav of the arti-t- f other
days, so that one 1ir1ds in walking
through them a series of nrl uri-es.
The lofty casings of the doorn are
all made of agates or of rare mar
bles, whose colors strangely veined
harmonize with the brocaded tape
stries of the walls.
Thcre is the salon of Charlis III.,
all is soft blue, starred with silver.
Other salons, hung with exquisite
old satins, are of a dying rose, with
the blazonries of Louis XV, or of an
inimitable 01(d rose ombroideredl in
gold, with an exuberant Renaiss
ance ornamentation; c. else of a
groen bizarrely mixed with safiron
yellow, or again of royal blue, em
blazoned with brilliant yellow, with
furniture of which the magificent
stiffness dates from the Emipire. A
certain grand salon, with a ceiling
all in flowers and scrol of faience,
hais mural panels in pearl-gray satin,
embroidered above and below wvith
garlands rosocolorud or white, which
moist have consumed thle lives of a
legion of patient wvorkw~omen. And
one0 feels that all these precious
things, respected by human revolu
tions, have dwvelt here immobile du
img years and centuries. The ghosts
of the monarchs lying in the Escurial
would find horo ag-'ni, initact and
only a little faded, the splendors
which they know.
TIhe throne Joomn, t.he imost im

vet, embroidered in gold; is peopled
the length of its walls by great black
statues holding ini their hannds gdld
emblems, and standing out in strange
ly agitated poses5 from the b)rillianco
of the red pedestals. Four lions in
bronze guard the steps of the throne
of Spain, whoe on soIlmn occasions
is seated, also in the garb of anciese
dlays, that Queen and adiirabile
mother whom Euarope at this mo
mnent seems to wish to abandlon in
the face of an unlooked for peril, of
tevolting aggressions. This even
ing the approaches to the p)alace are
comparatively tranquil and silent.
lnt, as more than anywvhero else
happens in Madrid, the crowd swells
from moment to moment, invades
the streets and the promenades, like
a sea, mounting at the approach of
dusk. One divines agitation, per
haps anxiety, iu the attitude of nor,
