house Friday evening, at 8.30 o'clock.

James Anderson, colored, was before
U. S. Commissioner Dominick yester
day on a charge of robbing the mail.
lie was carrying the mail between
Lanila and Cross Ilill, and slipped a
registered letter througI a small hole
in the sack and robbed it of its con
tents, $5. Wheni aevnsed of the rob
bery he owned up. IIo was placed in
jail in default of hail, and will be tried
in Greenville in OAcober.

Loss by Fire.
Mr'. Gco. WV. Summer had the mis
fort,ano to lose his large barn and con
tents by fire last Saturday morning
about 1. o'clock. The barn was on
what is known as the Claud Floyd
p)lace, in the uptper part of the county.
Besides the barn and food lie had two
fine mulics and a valuable hoise burned,
wagons, mower and o'thor valuable
farm tools. lie estima)tes his loss at
$1,300, no insurance. The origin of the
fire is unknown, but, Is thought to be of

Lewis Kiniarid, colored, accidentally
shot, and killed himself with a shot
gun at or near Old Towvn on Friday.
Kinard was on a horse and had been
handed a gun by a by-stander andl in
taking It, in some way the gun was
accidentally discharged, tho load takl
ing eliect In his arm. Amputation was
thought necessary and Drz. J. K. Gilder
went up to p)orform the operation with
Dr. A. L. Longshoco, but the negro
dIed from the shock and loss of blood
soon after the physicians reached him.

Saturday evening as Mr. J. R. Green
was paying off the hands for t,he week's
work at Mr'. Pool's stable, a negro,Davo
Dombo b)y name, gave him some impu
dence, and before Mr. Green could arise
from the chair atl-is desk, the negro
raked him across the head and side of
his face with a knife, making an ugly
*wound. Mr. Green lost considerable
blood from the cut, and after the
'doctors dressed the wound be finished
his work and went to his home. It
was an ugly cut and the nogro deserves
severe pun ishmenit. The negro has
been arrest,ed and placed in jail to await
trial at the circuit court for assauft and
battery,witch intent to kill.
