New Volume. T*
With this number we commence the
third Volume of the Timbs. Just two
years ago, in spite of the fears and fore
h ? li.ig< of those eVJU, who were friendly
to th<3 new En erpri.s.', the first copy
of the Oning .barg Tim Iis was issued, and
our many friends throughout the County
will share in our satisfaction that the pa
per is no longer an experiment, but an
established sucee-.s. The liberal pat
ronage ihat has bj.eu given us, proves the
want of an organ, which represents the
the tax p. tying citizens. The commence
iiioni of a new Volume appears to us n.
suitable time .to thunk our patrons for
past favors, and to urge upon the many
who are in .sympathy with us in feeling,
to show that sympathy in a substantial
manner, by subscribing to our paper and
omtuending it to their neighbors. We
would gladly enlarge the TlMBS, and only
await a more general support from our
people, to authorize the # expense neces
sary to increase the size and amount of
reeding matter in our paper. Friends,
help us to improve the ?'Times," and you
shall have "Value Received."
The Tax.
The time for collection of State taxes
has been extended until the 7th of March.
Our neighbor the "Neva" soya that
?Shcrifl Cain has settled the deficiency
against him, and resumed the duties of
his office.
Brnhchville bnsbnd arousing meeting
on the subject of taxation. We nreglad
to sec our Sister town is lending aid to
the radical chase.
Honor to the dead.
The trains of Wednesday as they pas
sed Orangoburg were draped with mourn
ing in memory of the late John Boy den.
Messrs. Moseley, Crook & Copes have
just received a fine lot of seed (Irish)
potatoes?you had better go and purchase
quick for they are going very rapidly
being such n fine lot.
m o ^ ?
We arc informed that Dr. A. Webster
has purchased the handsome town prop
erty of Col. T. Oliver. It is to be improv
ed and renovated for a hotel, and will bo
n most desirable resort. The enterprise
has our best wishes.

of groceries to his store, and invites the
public to examine his stock beforo buy

cheap as any body else.
Tax of 1865,

Tax of 1874,
Under F. J. Moses $2.257,646.
An increase "of ten for one, and all for
rascality und shnme.
Sign Fainting.
Mr. E. G.Tobin has just painted a sign
for Messrs. Moseley. Crook <fc Gopcrn
which shows what perscrercncc can do.
Mr. S is n young man who tauglithimsclf j
the art, nnd we venture to say that there
is not a painter in the ?State of bis, age
who can do as well as he.
Dr. E. J.-01iveros.
See, nnd read carefully the advertise
ment of the Doctor and you are sure of]
finding something that you need, and if
yon don't sec in his advertisement any
thing that you want, all you have to do
is to give him a cnll and ten to one he
will produce the article wanted.
Terrible Accident..
On Tuseday night Mr. John Boyden
was killed' by a train, which knocked
him down in the Charleston depot und
passed over his body. Mr. Boyden was
one of the oldest and most esteemed offi
cers of the road. His untimely death is
a source of sorrow to all who knew him.
Ho For Texas!!
Head the advertisement of the Lone
Star Route published in another column.
This route offers such advantages to per
sons wishing to emigrate that it would
pay to write to Mr. S. M. Miller G. T. A.
to find out the particulars, and wc arc
sure that your letter will meet with
prompt attention.
Horse Killed.
A day or two ago, we understand, that
a fine "blooded" horse was killed by a
train of the S. C. R. R. It required the
united efforts of one man to remove the
valuable carcass from the bed of the road.
Suppose we will bear further ofhis racing
qualities, pedigiee <fcc, when the parties
bring suit. Hope all invalid horses will
take notice and not frequont the bed of
the road.
Geo. H. Cornelson.
Call and examine the stock of Mr Gen
II. Cornelson, bis store is filled with all
the good things of this world, anything in
the Dry Goods or Grocery line he is sure
to have, and as for Hardware and Hats
his store is actually full of them. His
attentive and polite clerks are always
ready to wait on customers, nnd out of1
his variety there is bound to be something
you will want.
Burglars in Charleston.
The hotels of Charleston were visited
by burglars last Week, and the detective?
were led t.> look after some suspicious
characters. The rooms of the Waverly
had been entered, and a boarder had
been tbi en ten cd with a pistol if he made
an alarm. An officer afterwards attempt
ed to arrest the bold burglar, and receiv
ed a shot in his hot, and another in his
shoulder. The light fingered gentleman
was arrested however, and is held for
trial.
Rain, slop, and mud abound, and the
streets are in horrible plight. What is
to be done with Russell Street, is a grave
question, and puzzles the Mayor, as much
as it does the luckless pedestrian who.bus
business on the opposite side to where be
may stand. How to get over it, concerns
everyone, ami bis horse. A ferry cannot
operate without a charter, a charter can
not bo had without "greasing" and the.
grease pot 'is gin cout.' The better plan
is to plank the street, it will furnish a
roadway desirable in every respect, and
durable. Who is in favor of a plank road.
Letter From Texas.
Wo have received a letter from Mr.
Avinger (who resides at Hiekory Hill
Texas). Ho gives a very cheering ac
count of the affairs in the "Lone Star"
State,: and closes with the hope that
old South Carolina will soon be rid of
her troubles, &c. The gentleman has our
thanks for a filo of Texas papers.
Bamberg & Slater.
Now is the time to get the best horses
or mules for the leust price, and as Mess.
Bamberg & Slater have just received the
finest lot of horses and mule3 ever brought
to this market, wo advise all those who
may wish to purchase, to do so at once.
Messrs. Pamberg & Slater aro a now firm
just established, who have their stables
in.the rear of Messrs. Vose & Izlar. Give
them a call.

What Does it Mean
On Saturday fast the Treasurer had
turned over $5000 to the Express company
to go forward to Hardy Solomons Presi
dent of a Columbia bank, and thcparcels
were about to be delivered at the train,
when a runner arrived requesting the
Express agent "not to forward." A minute
later the Treasurer came up in seven
league boots and producing a mysterious
telegram from Columbia hinting some
thing about a hank, countermanded the
order to deliver the $0000 where it bad
been marked. Stand from under;

First Immigrant.
To our enterprising young townsman
Mr. C. I). Ivortjehn belongs the honor of
first bringing an Immigrant to Orange?
burg. This gentleman conceived the plan
of having one to clerk for him, and 'tele
graphed loCharlcston for one on Saturday
and the next day the clerk arrived. Just
go to Mr. Kortjdbn's nud sec how he (the
Immigrant) can clerk, lie can speak
English and wait on culoiuers ns well as
any body?if you want an excuse to go
to Mr. Kortjohn's to see him, why take
