GRAM) DEMOCRATIC It ALLY J
15000 People in Tonn! 1000 in Pro
cession I A Grant! Success !
The. rally of the Democracy on j
Tuesda y was one of w hich Orange
burg may well feel proud. In niiin
bora and enthusiasm it far exceeded
the most sanguine expectations, and
fell very little, if any, short of the
grand Hampton demonstration of
1S70. During the whole line of
march, from the Depot to the speak
ing grounds the air was rent with the
jjdlil_ huzzas of the rod shirt. Douio
^-Cr^.y^'oui'1 t oiinrTT^Which mean.-,
victory on the day of election which
is fast approaching. A goodly num
ber of colored Democrats, who were
brave enough to do right, despite the
jeers of their comrades, were .seen
gallantly riding along with their
white friends in their red shirt uni
form.
An attractive feature of the occa
sion was the splendid display of the
Ed ist o ^Hilles, the crack com pa i;y of
our Burg, who were nut in their
bright and gaudy uniforms.
The carriages which conveyed the
speakers were tastefully "decorated
by the fair hands of our ladies.
Across the street, near the Court
House, stood a magnificent arch, also
beau titled by the same fairy hands,
upon which stood in hold relief the
talismanie worth ??Truth, Justice
and the Constitution."
The speaker's stand resembled :i
fairy bower, and a little way oil*stood
a liberty polo from which the United
States Hag Moated majestically in the
autumn breeze.
In speakers our County was highly
favored and honored on this occa- ion.
ltichland sent us our own Hampton,
who spoke with more than usual for
vor aud eloquence. Edged.-Id gave
us the noble Butler, liarnwell sent
us the gallant Magood, our next
Governor. Kershaw gave us the
truirpel-toned Kennedy; and Char
leston the classic itutledge and silver- I
tongued orator O'Connor. The speak j
ing was exeellent%and the enthnsi
asm unbounded. The issues of the!
day were clearly set forth, and tie
heart of the Democracy fired with a
zeal w hich we hope will n.>l <iio out
until victory perches onourbnnm rs.
There are now but a few weeks
left until the day of elect ion. Let
every man dp bis duty il" he wishes
to perpetuate the eilivizatinn which is
essential to t he well being of t he so
eiety in which we live. To be lag
gartl now is to lose all that we have
gained by thestrnggles of the '.past,
and to fall b.-n lc into the slough of
Radical corrupt ion.
THE HOUR IS NEAR AT HAM)!
Scarcely three weeks will elapse
before the political status of the conn
try w ill he decided. It is, therefore,
of the greatest importance that the
few remaining days before the elec
tion should be faithfully utilized by
every Democrat who bus the good of
j his country ut heart. Individual
work is what is needed.
The man who, at tins time, selfish
ly pursues Iiis own business, leaving
the < 'ounty to lake rare of itself, fails
to realize the situation, anil coin pre
llend I lie danger.
If we eau nlford lo fall hack into
Radicalism, and have our substance
pilfered from us by a horde of politi
cal leeches t<> indulge in debauchery
and riotous living, we may he indif
ferent and lukewarm. liul is hardly
possible that we have forgotten what
we have sullercd from this source.
Indillercnce, prejudice <>r dissat isfnc
tion in the attainment of mn- indi
vidual preferences, can never so blind
the taxpayers of Orangoburg as i<>
cause them to forget the enormous
taxation under which they groaned
in Radicalism, and the lightening of
this burden and clog upon our pros
perity, under Democratic rule.
The meeting on Tuesday shows
that the Democracy are awake. It
is only necessary for each man to re
alize the necessity of individual
work. Over confidence is our haue.
Lei us devote the short time left us
to the cause of good g< tvcrniiicnt, and
I see to it that victory crowns our of
forts not only in the .Slate, hut ill the
(..'ounty which comes nearest to us,
and nliecls us most directly.

While n uumher of the colored

is no disguising the fact thai a lai'gc

Now it is high time ihal this fool
