There were a great many who be
gan to he discouraged when the news
came of the loss of Indiana to the
Democracy, hut we nre glad to see
that sober second thought is enab
ling the pai ly to view the matter in
its true light, and a healthy reaction
is manifesting itself everywhere.
The noble ] isition of llendricks and
other party leaders of that State,
whose equilibrium under this appar
cut disaster has never been disturb
ed, and who have met their country
men with words of cheer and en
eouragment in the midst of the de
pression which first look possession
of the thoughtless, has given fresh
spirit to the party in every direction.
The reasons assigned by these
leaders for the loss of the State are
apparent. Alarmed by the loss of
Maine, the Republicans, used the
most herculean oxerlionsin Indiana.
The corruption fund \'<>v buying
votes was the most immense over
Ivnown in the annals of American poli
ties. Repeating was also practiced
to the most si lame fu! ox tent, an I, be
sides all ibis, a systematic [dan for
colonizing colored voters in the State
from Kentucky and other States has
been going on for many months.
These facts only show the desperate
si raits Lo \s hieb the R< publicans have
been reduced. Rut such menus can
not be used so successfully in the
general election as in this State elec
tion. In this electi n the Republi
cans concentrated all their money
and their ellbrts, but in the general
elect ion this concentration will be tui
possible, because there will boa liglM
.all along the line The money used
then will be needed in other States as
well. There is therefore no reason
whatsoever lo argue from the State
of Indiana going Republican in the
Oetohor election that it will go so in
November. Rut let us take thodnrk
side of t he picture, and admit, for t he
sake of argument, thai Indiana goes
Republican, even then there area)
least ten or lifteeu dilfcrenl and most
probable phases, without that State,
which would give the election to
Hancock. 185 votes are necessary
to a choice. The si lid South with
New Yoik. New .Jersey and Connec
ticut would give us the requisite
number. Again, the solid South wild
New York, New Jersey and Califor

< hange I he eounI in various ways and
we are hopeful. There is not the occa
sion for discouragement that many of
us have indulged. All that is neees
san is hard work, und we believe
that the loss in this preliminary
skirmish will be a benelit to us in
. an dug more united and zealous nc
lions. Let us gird on our armor and
go to work.

Wo condemn the Democrats at this

as it is only by Irre speech and fail'

THE VI itQlNlA? KLKCTORAL VOTE.
Tin.- danger to the electoral vote of
Virginia is a greater cause of weak
ness to us than anything else in the
campaign. The I*'unders ami the
Readjustees, the two wings of the
Democracy, although both for iIan
cock', have put.out ench an electoral
ticket, the result of which may be. by
the concent ration of Republicans that
the State may go for Garlicld. When
wc think by union, thai Virginia is
largely Democratic this division of
strength is most unfortunate.
It is strange that men ol' inielli- I
gence will allow local 'iitli renees to
endanger our National prosperity.
One of the Democratic tickets must
iie withdrawn immediately, or the
State is i.' danger. The National
ftxeeulivo Committee hum sec t;: :;
immediately. There is no tune to
be lost. A break in the solid South
loses us Hancock. Will the Demo
crats of Virginia, by their childish
ness, and for a mere sentiment, bring
such a calamity upon us?
A RIOT AT/I Iii; NORTH.
On last Saturday night, during tin
Democratic parade in Wilmington.
Dclewarc, a riot was started by the
eolored+pooplc of the city. While the
procession was marching t hroiigh t lie
street, colored men stationed in a
brick building in the third story,
threw bricks and Ii ret I pistols into
the passing crowd, wounding a hum
her of Democrats. The Democrats
then rallied, fired into the building,
ami the colored men scattered and
escaped down Ninth r treet. Only]
two of (he colored men wore slightly
wounded. Six of the ringleaders
have since been arrested.
Troop-; should be sent lokccpthesc

The Radical Ticke t - Carpet-Haulers?
Politics and Religion.
If there ever was any grumbling
on the side of a few sore heads in the
Democratic part s, this folly is com
plctely laid aside in the fare of the
Radical ticket nominated on Tiles
day. It is now :i choice between this
thing or the Democratic ticket, and
there is not a decent mail who can
hesitate as lb his decision. The.de
feat of I hinean, 1 he native born frit nd
of the colored man, and the putting
in his place of the Kcverend(V) car

Senate, and the putting Duncan on
of ? he ('ounty ' Miairinanship for i !???
ftcrmudn carpet bagger Stinker is a
heavy blow to the Republican par'.v
of Orangcburg. The colored people
are not going to be run over in this
way by foreigners. The Democratic
ticket gives great sat iefael ion. It is
