had been declared free of bias at the
end of tdoay's proceedings In the
Panama libel suit, brought against
the Press Publishing Company, pub?
lishers of the New Tork World, .by
the United SUtes government in the
United States Circuit Court, Judge
Hough presiding. Tomorrow they
will be sworn In unless rejected by
peremptory challenges.
At the opening of court today coun?
sel for the defense characterised tbo
suit as unprecedentd in the history
of the United States government. It
was Instigated by Theodore Roose?
velt during his presidency. and
charges that President Taft. Douglas
Robinson, Charles IV Taft, a brother
of the president; William Nelson
Cromwell and Theodore Roosevelt
were criminally libeled In connection
with publications In the fall of 1908
relating to the purchases of the fran?
chise, mschlnery and other rights of
the Frencn Panama Canal Company.
Mr. Wisps! said that he should In?
terpose two defenses, "altogether out?
side of the legal question of whether
this Is a libel or not. We shall plead
Justification, and, secondly, excusable
libel.

land, were shot and seriously wound?
ed by Charles Burnett In the upper
part of the county this afternoon. It
is thought the former will die as he
was shot in the chest with a load of
bird shot at close range. The other
man is not so seriously hurt. He is
? shot about the abdomen,

noon late that Constable Maxby had
arrested the negro and was on his
way to jail with him. A lynching is
feared should Mr. Strickland die be?
fore the negro is placed in security.
Mr. Strickland was endeavoring to
make a collection of money from the
negro when a dispute arose, and the
shooting followed, but further details
of the difficulty are laoklng.
The Stricklands are sons of James
C. Strickland and both have families.
Prayer turns the heart toward the
sun of happiness.
The express office at Hampton was
entered by burglar.s who escaped

damages in the sum of $44,000.

Each and every person entering the
contest must be nominated on one of'
the Nomination Blanks published in
both the Watchman and Southron and
the Daily Item. The nomination
counts as 1000 votes, but only one
nomination will be credited to a per
son.
In each issue of the Watchman and
South ron and the Daily Item will be
published ? ballot which is good for
the number of votes specified on the
ballot.

How to Obtain Votes, t
Every new subscriber paying in ad?
vance, will be credited for each dollar
paid, 200 votes. Every old subscriber
paying up back dues will be credited
for each dollar paid ico votes, and on
each dollar paid in advance 20c votes.
No votes will be given on payments of
less than $1.00. Every person or firm
that brings or sends an order for ad?
vertising or printing and pays for same
in advance will be entitled to 100 votes
for each dollar paid. For money paid
on accounts 50 votes will be allowed
for each dollar paid, if money is
brought or sent to this office. No
votes will be given for money paid
collector.

Nominations will not be received later than December 24, therefore, it is important that the blanks be mailed
to this office at once. Remember every nomination blank counts for IOOO votes, but will not be
counted twice for the same person. We have a supply of voting ballots at our office which nust be filed
